Why are religious people so aggressive?

I work with some Mormons at work. Though they are very congenial good people, I had to wonder. What if an Athiest put on a white shirt and tie and walked down the street preaching that to believe in any superhuman micromanager was ridiculous. How far do you think he'd get before getting beat up. I saw a show where a couple of guys went to "the passion of christ" in devil suits and got drinks poured on them. I also saw a guy get beat up on a street corner for holding a sign saying "the devil was framed". I also heard of a couple of wars that have been waged in the name of yahwey. Okay, more than a couple. This question mainly references the "Yahweyan" religions of judaism, christianity, mormonism, and Islam(as I am sure you know they all worship the same god). Why do religious people insist that athiests and people of other religions tiptoe around their values? Yet they inundate everyone with their incessant pontifications on tv billboards door to door radio politics bumper stickers...?

Okay, first let me say I'm no fan of those folks either.

The Bible says that those who believe in Christ are to go forth and share the gospel. It DOESN'T say we're supposed to be obnoxious about it! Most of the time, though, the ones who get really aggressive are the pseudo-Christian cults (Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses) and hardcore fundies. And unfortunately, they are apparently misled about this teaching - so they exhibit very un-Christian behavior.

For the record, they annoy me too.

At the time the various books of the bible were being recorded and assembled, there was no question whatsoever that you believed in some kind of deity. The issue was the name of the deity and how you were required to recognize and worship him/her/it, at least in the middle east where at least three 'desert religions' originated and remain today.

None of them tolerate any 'disbelief' or assumption that life is merely a byproduct of an unfathomable universe. All claim some kind of universal truth wrapped up in a mystical being who created everything, yet seems focused on what you drink and who you sleep with.

There are extremist in any group & will be as long as we are human.
Jesus did not teach anyone to be aggressive as far as physical harm against anyone!
He taught to win souls by telling the truth in love & setting an example by the way we live.
As a christian,I have to stand by the moral laws He taught,& protect myself against being seduced by the world,but I will not beat anyone up because they won't listen to me!
It is become harder & harder to get anyone to hear the truth & accept Jesus,but as long as i have sincerely tried to tell someone the truth & shown my love & concern for them,if they choose not to listen,then God will not blame me when they have to be made to pay for their sins.
So don't try to hang this on TRUE christians.I would not gain anything by being mean or agressive!
BTW, I am not a mormon & I do not believe in their false religion & i am not a Jehova's Witness either,nor a Catholic.
I belong to Christ's church.

You can´t generalize, not everyone that believes the same thing acts the same way.
But you have to consider that part of their belief is "preaching" so it is ingrained in their customs, so they preach.
Also, sometimes they do not want to reason logically their beliefs, they know what is right, they don´t want real physical proof of the angel or the golden sheets or the magical glasses... and to discuss this aspects on this terms could make them sad or scared, and the result is anger, fighting, killing...
But not everyone is like that.

I think your stance on things is a bit over stated. No true Christian need to resort to violence when some simply state their views. We don't need to defend Jesus in this way. If they are truly atheists, then why would they want to be in the middle of a venue that is obviously not their own. I mean I would no more want to be in the middle of an atheist rally than I would the burning fires of hell.(no pun intended) May God Bless U.

faith perspectives everthing as strife and conflict. in case you do no longer accept as true with their view element you're disagreeing with God himself and for this reason the threats of hell or you being accused of being an infidel. Being religiously pious is annoying, particularly whilst what you have self assurance in is questioned and you at the instant cannot supply solutions. You pray for revelation and each so often to God to "punish" the sinners. All this happens whilst the "sinners" provide you no quarter yet take you on each thing. the main frastration is the silence of unanswered prayers and for this reason the perception in Judgement Day (If God can get you in our life time, surely he gets you on Judgement Day!). So be understand-the thank you to the believers its no longer their fault. They secretly pray to God/Allah to smite the scoffers or infidels and not something happens.

Wow, by reading the answers received to this question i noticed ALL of the ones that answered are utterly and totally confused not to mention the person who asked the question! You people need to get your heads in the Holy Book and read with understanding and get your heads out of you know where. You people reside in complete confusion. First of all im not here to give you the "pretty words" you want to hear but only to give TRUTH as told in Sacred Scriptures so it doesnt matter who agrues in ignorance or who disagrees because the truth is going to remain true whether you see it or look away, there is still going to be but 1 truth regardless of how unstudied you are and your lack of knowledge. Firstly i noticed one of the "answerers" has "lesbian" in its name, not only is being a homosexual a mental illness it is an ABOMINATION!! To another "answerer" who was a female (cant remember the username) who said something to the effect "Jesus never taught violence only love" you are most certainly a member of the judeos synagogues of satan they like to call "churches" these days because i can think of no other reason someone would be so ignorant of Scripture...for one thing our Messiahs name wasnt truly "Jesus", it was and is Yahshua, "Jesus" is an interpretation of his name, if my name were "Frank" and i went to any other country on earth would my name be interpreted? I being a TRUE Christian would if i had it my way (and the Sacred Scripture declares it so) INSIST that no one be around us but our own people that hold the knowledge of the truth of TRUE Christianity (NOT "judaism"!!!) unless they're just traveling through our land, THAT is the Law...so yes the Word of Truth insist's that if you're not Christian, you do NOT belong around our people to pervert their thoughts with idol worship...if it were the way it were suppose to be ALL idol worshippers (atheists, pagans, etc. etc.) would be executed on sight and as my Father lives that is EXACTLY the way it HAS to be and WILL be again very very soon now! Read 1 Kings 18:21-40...Elijah confronted 450 baal priests who were leading our people astray and when the baal worshippers "god" didnt answer and our Father answered Elijah, Elijah told our people who were around who beheld the fire from YHVH to take all 450 baal worshippers down to the river and cut their heads off, leave not 1 of them alive...AS IT SHOULD BE!!! Elijah so was loved by YHVH for those acts of obediance that Elijah never tasted of death, he was taken up to Heaven. If these Truths offend you, well...maybe you're in the wrong place?

So that you people may understand...who say things like ""Jesus" (Yahshua) never hated anybody", or "Jesus only taught "love""...well he did love his kinsmen, his family, his brethren, his race, his begotten offspring...understand "Jesus" was the embodied YHVH...in words more clearer for you, He was "GOD" in the flesh! There in no other beside Him, He is Alpha and Omega. So realise when YHVH said "bring them mine enemies and slay them here before me" and "esau i have hated, Jacob have i loved" that this IS the same embodied Messiah speaking these words...for he said "i alone am the Most High", he told us "there are no others". maybe that has cleared up a few things for a few people but unless you study to find yourselves worthy you can never understand the total truth. Seek the TRUTH and when you find it, the Truth shall make you free (of the bondage of lies you've been taught all throughout your lives).

Let me make something clear, i wasnt trying to "belittle" anyone here, only trying to get the truth out there. the word "ignorant" is not an insult in the way that i've used it (at least i dont think so), if you're "ignorant" of something you just "dont know" thats all, we all have to start somewhere. To any "pastor" who reads any disagrees with anything i've said, well...if you call yourself "pastor" you should KNOW what was said is Truth, if not then maybe the word "pastor" isnt the correct title for you or maybe more in depth studies would be in order.
