Being on-call means that you go about your personal business, but you carry a cell phone and maybe a laptop, and you have to be available to work anytime -- day or night -- if the need arises.
I worked on-call at my job in customer service for a major fuel company, and would get calls around the clock from people who had questions about their fuel deliveries.

On call jobs train you for the work they do and then they only call you when they are short staffed or just need an extra worker. They do not guarentee any amount of hours and are not a steady source of income because you never know when you'll work or for how long.

She was stupid and deserved what she got. OK she was only an admin clerk, but lets assume she was responsible for the input of DNA onto the proposed national database. Lets assume her attitude caused her to miss input your details and you end up getting a knock on your door at 4 in the morning, the police state that you are under arrest for murder, you have to prove that you are innocent. Is she the type of person you would like to be doing that particular job?, I think not, if she feels like that about her job she should get out, or suffer the consequences when her boss finds out just how she feels about her task.

You must be ready to work when you get the call to. Usually a component for truck driver, towing service, and so on.
Its a really unstable way to operate, since you dont know when they will call you and how much money you will have most the time.
Every person has to have stability. remember that. if its for you, go for it and do a good job. good luck.

On-call means you only work if the company needs you.Sometimes they have too much people on their staff that is why they put certain people on-call. So, you also have to have a flexible schedule. You may never know when the company needs you and you are busy with something else.

Just like the others described above, plus you get paid while being on call. At the County you get paid $4 an hour while being on call, then if you actually get called you get paid time and a half.

It is not a stable job. You get paid for hours worked only. I suggest you look for regular employment.
Peace and blessings!

You keep your cell phone with you at all times and your employer calls you in to work whenever they need you, any hour of the day or night and any day of the week.
