A screenshot with software WILL NOT capture the brightness thingy popping up as it is displayed purely by he monitor.

Sounds like the buttons on the monitor have become faulty, and are activating themselves.

If the monitor still inder warranty, get it repaired, if not, and is not far out, you could try asking them, stating is was "Not of a quality comparable with the price" or simply buy a new one.

Dude you can try putting a bolt and get this self-activating button jammed so it is not in pressed position.

First take a needle, and dab it somewhere around the button, so you can lift it up a bit, just change its position. See now if it still calls the brightness menu. If it does, try the other button(I dunno what kind of monitor you've got), until you get the right one.

When you have found the right one, take a sheet of paper, tear a small piece off, fold it few times and push between the button and the hole. Voila!

Of course if it is just the button in 'pushed' position..it might be some internal circuit screwdup, but I honestly doubt it, try lifting those buttons, this should help.

Sounds like you have a bad monitor. You can look on craigslist or thrift store for an inexpensive replacement. You can get a good size CRT for cheap because everyone is upgrading to LCD monitors.

religiously try kirk v's solution, dont try in anyway open the monitor fix the buttons. monitors contains high voltage, very dangerous. if you're broke and can't afford a technician, wait til you're unbroke and have it repaired...better be broke than dead
