Many people have attempted to answer your question and no one has come up with a perfect analogy or an explanation that seems to satisfy.

Basically God has revealed Himself to mankind as one God in three persons. It doesn't make sense to us because how can one be three? But God is an infinite, eternal Spirit who is beyond our comprehension. As one Quaker in early America put it when asked if he could understand the trinity, he said "Nope. And I'm glad that I can't because if I could understand God then He wouldn't be much of a God now would He."

Jesus said that He and the Father were one and that anyone who had seen Him had seen the Father. The Holy Spirit is called God by Peter in Acts 5 and before Jesus left the earth He said that He would ask the Father to send another one like Him which in the Greek means another one that is exactly the same as the first one.

Here is how the Westminster confession of faith puts it.

"In the unity of the Godhead there be three persons, of one substance, power, and eternity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost: the Father is of none, neither begotten, nor proceeding; the Son is eternally begotten of the Father; the Holy Ghost eternally proceeding from the Father and the Son.

The Bible does not use the term Holy Trinity, but the Bible contains many references to the Triune God (2 Cor. 13:14). God the Father, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit have always been, and they always will be. With the Lord there’s no beginning and no end. The Lord is unchanging: the same throughout eternity (Matt. 28:19).

Holy Trinity reveals one God

The three persons of the Holy Trinity are distinct and separate: yet, they are one (Eph. 4:4–6). This gives us the mystery of the Godhead—we wonder how this can be? (1 Pet. 1:2). As we look at the traditional teachings of the Christian Church and study the Bible, we should grow in our understanding and accept the Holy Trinity by faith (Luke 3:21, 22).

Holy Trinity—One God
The Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit,
three separate Persons, and yet One.
Divine mystery beyond perception.
We look at One—We look at All.
We pray to One—We pray to All.
We love One—We love All.
One love’s us—All love us.
Father–Son–Holy Spirit—One God.

God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit

I became intensely interested in doctrine and theology basically due to the lack of resources I found on the doctrine of the Trinity and what it means for Christians.

Here is as succinct a definition as I have found:

Within the one and only eternal God there exists 3 distinct and separate persons/personalities; God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit. Each person is coequally and coeternally the one and only God.

God is infinite and not limited by space and time since He created them. So, miraculously the Holy Being can coequally and coeternally be 3 distinct persons that form the Godhead.

Hope that helps.

The Trinity is just to tie things together for people who need that. For myself I do not need to bind them all together, i understand the purpose of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and I know all three are divine and supernatural with the full authority of God. The Trinity itself, as a concept to explain how the three are of great importance.

The trinity are the persons of the one and only supreme God. God the Father is the Creator, God the Son is the Savior and sacrificial lamb and God the Holy Spirit is the counselor and guide given to us after Jesus ascended. Their personalities are so much more deeper than the above explanation but that can only be gained through a personal relationship. Hope this help.

Yes, I am a Christian, and no, I am not trying to be facetous or insulting, when I say that I really hate to re-state what has been stated before at length.

I have answered so many questions on this subject, I wrote a bible study paper on this very topic, and posted it in my new bible study group, "Truth In Doctrine" here at Yahoo.

The link to the group is in my profile, if you are serious. Look for "The Trinity? Who is God?" in the messages section, as the archives are open to anyone, not just members. If anyone wishes to post, though, they must join.

When I say "so many questions, I am not necessarily referring to "just here at Yahoo answers", I literally mean everywhere. In person, online here, and in many christian groups, etc...

You would not believe how many people ask about this very topic. The reason I point you to the paper, is that it is exhaustive (fairly thorough) on the topic, and I cannot say it better here, without literally placing a monstrously long post. Any topic this sensitive should be answered thoroughly.

If you are looking for truth, you may like it. The paper quotes the official definition, breaks it down into simple to understand english, then examines everything according to scripture.

If you could care less what is true, then it probably will not be to your liking, as what scripture shows may not be in total agreement with doctrine.

God is the Father, the Creator of all things. Jesus Christ is His Son, also His Word made flesh that lived among us. See the Gospel of John, 1st chapter. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God that dwells within and comforts all believers in Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit teaches us about Christ. Christ teaches us about the Father. Since Christ is God's Word made flesh, when God speaks, His words are actually and literally Jesus Christ. When Christ died and rose again, then ascended to the Father, He sent the Spirit of God to comfort us and teach us the Truth. Jesus Christ is the Truth, the Life, and the Way. So, just like you have a body, soul, and spirit. The Triune God is One being with different personifications and duties. The trinity is very hard to explain. But keep in mind, we cannot limit the Almighty God. I hope this helped. Peace.

Hi Sweetie (I'm an old lady), I'm pleased to hear you're trying to understand the deeper aspects of the Bible. The Trinity is just a word describing the three persons of the Hebrew Godhead who operate as one. They are composed of the Father (YHWH in Hebrew), the Son (Y'shua Ha Mashiach in Hebrew) and the Holy Spirit (Ruach Ha Kodesh in Hebrew). All three have been present from the beginning to the end of the Bible, sometimes through direct name. Sometimes through allegory.

I guess I'll compare it to something personal.

I'm a son, an uncle and a cousin...does this mean I'm 3 different people? No...I just have different relationships with each one.
I'm not comparing myself to the Trinity, just trying to show that the concept of 3 in 1 is not unusual in the universe.

I don't think it's possible to fully understand God any more than it's possible for a garden snail to fully understand the gardener.

From what I learned.

The father is an authority figure, divine and above man.

The son is Man in physical form but still maintains divinity spiritually. There is more connection when God decides to suffer as a human being.

Holy spirit is found within the believer - divinity coming from within rather than besides you as man, it brings you much closer to god.

I hope i got it right, I guess i'll get judged by my thumbs up or downs.
