Don't try to force your religion on him. He loves you now, but he might not be willing to adapt to your beliefs. He should accept and respect your religion, but you don't have the right to drag him to church if he's not comfortable being there. You could bring it up to him, see if he's interested, but if he's not, drop it. Maybe in time he'll get curious on his own :)

I went to Sunday School and I was baptised and confirmed when I was a child. I still go to church sometimes (very rarely) but I don't believe in God so by definition I am an atheist.

Are you upset that he is an atheist? Is he upset that you aren't?

For some people these are life or death questions, for others they are just a matter of choice. You have to decide how important it is for you.

You can ask him if he would be willing to come to church with you. He should be at least willing to try it out, but I wouldn't expect him to make a habit of it.

If you get married and have kids (say) there is the question of whether you will baptise the children and go to church as a family. I think it can be a positive influence - Jesus seems like a pretty cool person with lots of good advice about how to live well. I don't think my parents are particularly religious, but they thought it would be good to expose us kids to it. I don't think that was a bad thing.

So no it's not bad to date an atheist. But there are some things that you should think about.

You can ask him to join you in church. How he responds and how you respond to his response will tell you a lot about how you communicate and how you deal with the religious difference.

It's not bad to date an atheist unless you're intolerant of atheism or he's intolerant of theism. If either of those are true, soon enough one of you will try to convert the other, which is the end of the relationship.
