many chinese today know somewhat alittle bite of english. considering that Olympia is coming up. their english arin't that great but u can understand what their are trying to tell you. the job market in china is not that open. its very hard to find a job today due to over population. however i think an australian may be different because you are from another country and you another culture and language that people in china does not have the advantage of

The employment market for foreigners if China is good. Although English is rapidly expanding in the area it is still difficult to find a good translator in most cities. Statistics showed that nearly 60 per cent of primary school children now learn English in China. What's more, the total numbers of English speakers in India and China now exceed the number of speakers elsewhere in the world. So the language is growing phenomenally. But right now if worse comes to worse you can always get a job as an English teacher. They pay pretty well as well.

in cities, kids start learning english as early as elementary school. so by the time they graduate high school (and going off to college/grad school), their english is usually pretty good.

fluent english speakers earn a lot more than non-english speakers, so you should be fine... BUT americans/english-speakers are NOT rare in china anymore... so don't think you'll get a good-paying job just relying on ur english :)

also, it depends on what you do...
- technology: not much chance since engineers in china are VERY qualified, even for the american market
- business: good chance...

check out some websites before you go! good luck :]
