I have a multese-poodle. He is very smart and learns tricks easily. He is very loving and affectionate and soft. He doesn't shed which is nice but does need haircuts every 6-8 weeks. I had a lab before and what a handful!! This dog is sooooo cute and fluffy and loves kids. Everyone thinks he is adorable. He is only 7 lbs full grown and can go anywhere with me. Mom will like this size better than a big dog, trust me!!

Why not research the corgi? The are a sm/med. sized dog, that have wonderful personalities. You can get them with or without tails (Pembroke or Welsh), and they like to learn tricks.
Sit down and talk over more dog breeds with your mom, and don't get nasty about it. She is allowing you to make a very adult decision that will effect the entire household, that is major responsibility on your shoulders!!
I would suggest if your mom says that labs are to large to look at medium sized dogs. There are some great breeds that are medium sized that weigh 60 pounds and under. She may be hoping that you look at a medium or small breed because she is thinking of when you get sick SHE will have to be the one who takes the dog out. When you are at school SHE will have to be the one who takes the dog to the vet.
Look up dogs on the akc.org website with her, make it a fun time. Look at the dogs and say I like this one, and I don't like this one. Find out what she likes, and what she doesn't like. From there you will have the beginning of a list, and know what breeds will make your household happy, and what ones will make it miserable.
After you know what top three breeds that you and your mom agree on, look up the parent breed site on the web. Research the dogs personalities there. If you still are not sure, then CALL breeders. Breeders will be more then happy to talk to you and help you decide if the dog breed you are researching will fit into yours and your mothers life style.

Well do your research first! I learned this the hard way trust me! There are a ton of websites dedicated to specific breeds, so you should research at a neutral website like AKC. You can also check with your local animal shelter for research material. Also you don't want a dog too fluffy and soft because that just means you will go through lint rollers like crazy!

A mutt from your local shelter. The BEST dogs in the world.
I've got one and I've trained him lots of tricks.
Mine's fluffy too.
Edit. Any dog will not be harmful if you train it from the start that being aggressive is bad. With this new dog, don't use a shocker , only train with positive methods.

You should get a great Dane for sure now i know they re not fluffy but they are very smart and are know as the "gentle giants" so you wouldn't need to worry bout your neighbours also they don't mind where they sleep and they are even happy to live in a one bedroom unit or a tiny little flat as long as they get the usual walk here and there. they aren't very hard to look after and are active but not to active the perfect dog for any person.
Hope that helps :)

The Shetland Sheepdog is an outstanding companion dog with a delightful temperament. Gentle, sensitive, loyal and dainty. Very lively, intelligent and trainable. The Shetland Sheepdog is one to the smartest breeds, very willing to please and obey. These dogs are so smart that many fanciers consider them to have almost human intelligence.
The Toy Poodle is sensitive and remarkably intelligent. Highly responsive, they are said to be one of the most trainable breeds. Pleasant, happy, perky and lively, they like to be with people.
Golden Retrievers are lovable, well-mannered, intelligent dogs with a great charm. They are easily trained, and always patient and gentle with children. Loyal, confident, sweet and eager to please. It is active, loving and an outstanding family dog. Golden Retrievers enjoy pleasing their masters, so obedience training can be fun. They excel in obedience competitions. Friendly with everyone, including other dogs.
The Pomeranian is a lively little dog. Intelligent, eager to learn, very loyal to its handler and family. Willful, bold and sometimes temperamental. If it is properly introduced they usually get along with other dogs and household animals without any problems, but some of them seem to think they are much larger than they actually are and do not hesitate to attack much bigger dogs. It is an excellent watchdog with a resounding bark.

Get a Weimaraner or Vizsla! They are both gorgeous dogs and they have pretty close to identical breed standards. They are about lab size (a little bigger), are very active but will calm down if trained to, and they are EASY to train. But they are not fluffy. They both have short, sleek coats. Most Weimaraners are silver/gray but some are tan or blue. Vizslas are a chocolatey brown version of them.

Don't get a pure breed. They aren't smart. We paid hundreds of dollars for one, and she destroyed our house. Go to the pound and adopt a puppy. Not only will you be getting your dog, but you will be saving it. My family has adopted two dogs. One is almost 16, and the other is 2. Our old dog is older than I am, and he is like my big brother. Our other dog is so smart, it's creepy. She was housebroken by the time she was 1, and she knows the command down, and she follows me everywhere.

I think you should get a Maltese! They are not only very cute, they are also affectionate. It stands about 5 in. (12.7 cm) high at the shoulder and weighs from 2 to 7 lb (0.9—1.4 . So as you can see it is very small. Its long, flat-lying, silky coat is pure white and hangs down on either side of the body almost to the ground.
