I'm sort of confused on elistment in the Navy. Is it 2 years active duty, then another 2 inactive- in which I really don't do anything but be available if they need more soldiers? During the 2 inactive years will I have to attend meetings of some sort as well as keep my hair short? Yes, I should talk to a recruiter but everybody says they don't always tell the truth.
Thanks in advance.

if you are talking about the NCS prgram, it is 15 months of Active duty(starting after A school) followed by a mandatory 2 years in the Reserves. there is no way around the Reserves, they are not letting NCS types extend on Active duty.

If you are talking a regular enlistment, how long your serve on AD is entirely dependent onthe rating you choose. most require a 4 year commitement, som e require 5 or 6 years. aftre that, you can choose to re enlist under PTS, or you can go to the IRR for the remainder of your 8 year contract.

ALL contracts are 8 years, it just depends on how that is borken up into Activce duty time, reserves, and IRR.

If you are going to enlist for 2 years of active duty, you will have another 6 years of inactive duty because the total term is usually 8 years. During your inactive duty you are not paid are considered a civilian again, so you can have your hair as long as you wanted. The only requirement is that you keep the Navy informed of any changes in your residence.

What they don't tell you is that you actually sign up for a total of 8 years. If you do 2 years active duty, then you're still on the books for the remaining 6 years as "inactive reserve." After you reach EAOS (End of Active Obligated Service) or the end of your active duty, you're free to look and dress as you want...there are no meetings or duties that you'll be expected to show up for. If, after EAOS, you sign up for ACTIVE reserve, then you are expected to maintain military grooming standards and show up for your "weekend warrior" exercises. The active reserve is the first group to be called back into service should there be a need (war, disaster, etc.) and then if the need becomes more dire, that's when they start rounding up the inactive reserve (very unlikely, but it's possible).

inactive reserves means you're just their in case they need you, although being called up for the navy isn't very probable, since they aren't having any recruiting problems. You don't need to keep your hair cut or go to any meetings, just keep them supplied with a vailid point of contact in case they need you.

Generally in my day it was understood you would have 4 years active duty & a further 4 in the IRR. The IRR is a In case of emergency list. They don't train or drill.

when you are in active reserve you usually attend "drill" once a month and a week or more in the summer for how ever long you sign up for.
