No I don't do 540s but I have students that I have taught that type of aerial kick to and I tell you what I tell them. Doing them as well as any other technique that puts a lot of torsion on the ankle and knee or on the ankles when landing will create problems if you do them repetitively on the wrong surfaces-especially if you are landing hard. If you are doing them on very soft mats as your foot lands and sinks into the mat and is twisting it can cause a lot of stress and torsion on your knee and ankle and the damage may already be done. Coming down on it to hard even on a firmer surface like a carpeted hard wood floor can also cause this if the landings are to hard and to much twisting or torsion is taking place.

You may have only strained a ligament and with some rest it might be ok. Lay off of doing them and kicking in general for a week and start back with just simple kicks and see if the pain comes back. If it does on simple kicks you may have a partial tear and thats more serious. On the other hand if you can do simple kicks without the pain then gradually work your way back up to doing 540s and pay closer attention as to how hard you are landing and how much torsion and impact you are placing on your knee and ankle. Also if you can more fully complete the rotation in the air that will be less torsion and stress on that leg as you land and try to land lighter.

all 540's are bad.

They serve no martial purpose.
