I think in alot of cases its the parents laziness. They just want to give them a pill and they won't have to deal with their child. What they need is better disipline. Now I am not saying that some kids really do have these problems but I think there is no way this many kids have it.

Firstly I want to say that there are many legitimate cases of children with ADD and ADHD. It is something we never heard of years ago. Most kids were just considered "hyper". You hear a lot of reports on it now. I also believe that that "diagnosis"is abused somewhat now. A lot of parents may have an unruly child and a quick fix is to take them to the doc and them be diagnosed with ADD or ADHD and pumped full of drugs to control their behaviors. It is a sad state. I have seen this many times. I work in a mental health facility and have been told by many co-workers that the parents "insist" that their child has to be put on medication because that is the only way they can control them. I think doctors need to look at some of the parents to determine the source of the children's problems. Of course, some of the doctors are quick to dole out the medication also.. Sorry, just my opinion..

Because it's an excuse orientated society which would rather give a name to a problem and make it a legit medical problem then deal with their kids real issues.
No other country has the rates of ADD and ADHD that the US does, is it because every other country has morons for doctors or is it because doctors and pharmaceutical companies profit from this mass marketing? No other country advocates the drugging of their own children like the US does.

I have 20+ years as a mental health practitioner, now retired, and I can tell you that "so many" kids have ADD and ADHD because it became the new fad for parents to worry over their kids and it was financially successful for the psychiatric and pharmaceutical professions, so they keep it alive. Also, many practitioners get so "sold" on the diagnoses that, instead of truly doing an indepth investigation of the symptoms and etiology, they fall back on some popular and easy to remember diagnosis so they can process their clients. If that sounds a harsh accusation of psychiatry, psychology, and pharmaceuticals, I can assure you that it's not as harsh as it is true. I've seen way too much of it. And "jeanclaudefan" and "lisa m" and "Lorelei" and "miranda-" all deserve a great big hug for their wisdom and experience. God Bless you.

Personally I think these issues have always been present in the classroom however they were never identified .Do you remember in the past that there were always a few kids who always seemed to be the class clown, or the kids who seemed to disrupt the class, the kids who just didn't seem to quite fit in etc.I often wonder how many of these kids had learning disabilities and were never identified.I wonder how many kids would rather be thought of as the class clown than the student who couldn't read well or understand some concepts.Do you ever remember hearing of students who were dyslexic ? I'd like to think that better identification tecniques today have allowed most students the opportunity to learn.I also think that inclusion in the classroom has benifitted the identified students. In the past these kids were labeled as hyper, troublemakers or "slow". Just because something wasn't identified in the past does not mean it didn't exist.

I don't believe all kids diagnosed have it. I think some is poor parenting. In the case of children who really do have it i think preservatives and the junk food that is freely available. Some of it is genetics. Remember the "naughty ' kids in school. They are having the kids that are now diagnosed ADHD.
but I think a lot comes down to what kids these days are eating and ingesting through packaging and the air.

Most people have said that it is due to lazy parenting and the medical industry overselling drugs due to profit/ease of processing ect.
Although I agree with this reasoning, I also believe it is due to the namby pamby ways we now deal with DISIPLIN with our children. Lets face it guys, for us people who are over 35 years of age, if we acted up the way some kids now days do, we would get a wallop and told to behave. If that did not work you could expect to get beaten with a slipper/belt/cane across your backside.
Nowadays if a parent tried that they would be sued by there kids for damages!!! So what are we left to do with them as punishment? Ground them - this means that they are sitting around at home, getting in your hair, and can not get out and socialise with others and interact in society - instead they drive there parents crazy all day, which results, finally, in the parents giving in and letting them go out anyway, so now the kid believes that there is no punishment - they may have been
told that they were grounded for a month, but in reality after 1-4 days if the parents don’t let them out of the house, the parents will then go crazy - so you have at least one generation bought up to believe that there is no consequences to there actions, so what happens? The kids get out of control and everybody wonders why!

Everyone wants to label kids. I am a child psychologist and it seems like every kid who acts up at all gets a label. Docs are putting kids on drugs just for being kids. Last month I saw a family whose kid was 3 and he was rambunctious and they wanted Ritalin to make him calm down. He is a friggin 3 yo, he is supposed to run and play. There are some kids who truly have a problem and need help but the majority dont. The majority have parents who dont want to parent their kids and they use behavioral disorders as excuses for their own inept parenting.

Kids have ALWAYS had behavioral problems, it just wasn't as recognizable or (quite frankly), CARED ABOUT before. Today, there's a drug for everything, and to be blunt, parents are turning their children into junkies.
