Acts 17:21-23 (King James Version)
21(For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
22Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars' hill, and said, Ye men of Athens, I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.
23For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you.
....Mars was named after the Greek god of war...but here Paul was telling the Greeks that the unknown god they also worshiped was THE GOD ...the one true GOD....the one the Christians worshiped and were persecuted for worshiping.

It's a name, not the plural of 'Mar' -- the Latin and Greek plurals do not follow the same rules as English.
What was Mars called in the Middle East before there was any contact with the Greek or Romans/

It's a name not plural
Bahram - Persian personal name, and name for the planet Mars, meaning "victory".
Mars - Myth name of the Roman god of war. Mars has no Indo-European derivation and is most likely derived from the name of the Etruscan god Maris, meaning "of the sea'. He later became associated with Ares, the Greek god of "war".

It was named for the Roman god Mars. There was only one of him, too.

Oh come ON...............Mars was the god of war in an ancient religion.........They named it that as a representation in the heavens of a visible manifestation of that god. It has NOTHING to do with Christianity. How self-centered can you be? The world doesn't revolve around what YOU believe.

It's named after the Roman God of War. The S didn't not signify plural in latin.
