I know some cars/trucks never got labeled for it and were just a reason for car companys to get tax refunds.

I read somewhere that it is a tax refund for the car makers, they put the flex fuel systems in for a tax refund. And as for on the cap, i dont see a symbol their. I know when i bought it i looked at the 4runner and that had a symbol for it. I was told some dont show it but i assumed most models have it now.

No-2006 Explorers/Mountaineers are/were NOT flex-fuel vehicles.
2002-3-4-5 with the 4.0 liter V6 were factory equipped as FFVs. IF the 8th character of the vin is a "K" it IS a FFV
If the 8th character is NOT "K" then it is not a ffv.

Here is a list of all the Ford vehicles that have been produced as FFVs
http://www.e85fuel.com/information/ford.php
Mercury list:
http://www.e85fuel.com/information/mercury.php
Mazda list (same as Ford Ranger)
http://www.e85fuel.com/information/mazda.php

Now just because it's on the lists doesn't mean it's automatically a FFV....there will be a sticker on the INSIDE of the Fuel Filler Door (not the gas cap!) that will say that it can use E85 , or Ethanol fuel

The 8th character (engine code) of the vin also tells which ones are.
Taurus/Sable FFVs use engine code "2"
Explorer/Mountaineer FFVs use engine code "K"
Ranger/B3000 (mazda) FFV's use engine code "V"
and all 2007 FoMoCo FFVs (Town Car, Crown Victoria, F150) use engine code "V"

*****i know that's more info than U wanted, but sorry i get carried away sometimes....my nickname (Ethol) is actually a contraction for the word ethanol*****

As for the tax credits ?
YES there are federal tax incentives for a FFV ONLY if you buy it as a BRAND NEW vehicle.
AND many states offer incentives as well !

EDIT:
and btw...the 4Runner has NEVER been produced as a FFV
here are all the FFVs on American roads to date:

Most Explorers are Flex Fuel...check the manual to be sure. There is no tax credit for Flex fuel vehicles to my knowledge...just hybrids.

maybe, the fastest way to tell is to look inside the fuel filler door, if it says ulnlead fuel it isn't a flex fuel engine, if it say alcohol fuels it is a flex engine.
