Hi, everytime I drive home, I pass an apartment complex. Next to the entrance to the complex, there is a very tall light pole with a pair of shoes wrapped around the top. I was told that this means that somewhere in the complex, people are selling drugs. Is that true? Shoes on tope of the light pole = drug dealing, I was told.

You may find the following link interesting:

I always associated it with gang activities and drug dealing, but the link provides many more possible reasons.

I hope this helps.

In the 1950's, when I was a kid we had to wear special non marking gym shoes to gym class in elementary school, we also had to have special tempera paint for art class.
When summer vacation came we had to clean out our desk and closet. We would throw the unwanted shoes up over the electrical wires and break our paint bottles on local walls, I guess to show our 2 months of freedom starting.
It has been going on a long time.
As a police officer for 29 years in a large gang and drug infested city I never saw it as being a sign of anything special (except after the movie "Wag the Dog" came out).

most likely, some kids were messing around teasing another kid, took his shoes, and threw them up where the kid couldn't get them down. (at least that is what i always think when i see it)
