German shepherds are really good dogs but they are not right for everyone. Plus they are popular which makes them over bred and bred by just anyone with two Shepherds, which makes it is hard to find a good one. Bad breeding can result in unstable temperament, behavioral, health and structural problems. If you really want one make sure you do a lot of research and make sure that this breed is right for you. A German Shepherd is a very smart dog that needs socialization and training. They are also problem solvers and get bored easily so they need a firm knowledgeable handler, otherwise a Shepherd can be destructive, pushy, timid, nippy and aggressive which is not good, especially if you can not handle the dog.
The person below me has no idea what they are talking about and the only good thing mentioned in their post was leerburg.com

I love german shepherds! I have had them practically my whole life. Although they are loyal and friendly, they are definitely not a good breed for everybody. They require ALOT of attention and exercise. They are big dogs and it hurts badly when they jump on you. You need to start from the beginning to teach them proper people etiquette, like do not jump on people, bite them, etc. They can be very protective of the home and they are very strong dogs. They are also very intelligent and love attention. In my experience the females tend to be more protective of the home and lie alot. What I mean by this is that they bark when nothing is really just to impress you.

The german shepherds of these days is riddled with all sorts of health issues. Go online and check out good breeders that belong to clubs and have the knowledge of the breed and the health issues. Make sure they will guarantee their dogs from certain illnesses and will be there for you if any questions for the remainder of the dogs life. Their are no guarantees with this breed....the years are short and it can be as hard on you as them when they get older. Make sure you are willing to go to the end with the dog.
Also, get a good vet that knows the breed.
Good Luck

German Sheperds are working dogs. If they are not give constant sitmulation and firm direction then they can be problems. The german sheperd can be the dog who rescues stranded people, takes down a criminal, finds drugs, or it can be the dog to bite and wreck havock. They are extremely intelligent and they can be very sensitive. Sheperds do not respond well to yelling and agression. They require above moderate grooming and a lot of room to roam. They are certainly not apartment dogs. They need a lot of socialization because they can be agressive if not properly socialized. They were bred to be herding dogs so they can be protective and domineering. You must be firm, consistent, yet fair and loving to these dogs

They are very loyal and social dogs who love to play and are very family oriented. However they do require a lot of grooming and exercise. They are high energy dogs that need plenty of room and need to have their prey drive stimulated everyday. They are very strong and can accidentaly injure someone if not provided with proper training. Make sure you buy from a reputable breeder or adopt from a rescue. Animal shelters always have german shepards for adoption.

They can be a high maintaince breed in regards to medical problems. They also need professional training as they are a working/herding breed and will want to rise above everyone in the pecking order.
They need to be socialized at a young age and need to be purchased from a reputable breeder who has cert. in hips, elbows and eyes. Some sherperds are also being scanned for cardiac problems now as well.

German Shepherds are good pets. I had one that I got when he was a few months old. I would have him inside on a thin leash in the livingroom and he would go on the newspaper. This way he would go in one spot. When he grew, well to take him for walks was a hassle because he was so strong that he would run pulling his leash and I would be practically flyng like a kite because of his strength. Now they do not bother no one. But a neighbor was always bothering the dog and shaking sticks at him until one afternoon my dog bit him in the leg. He called the police (the police knew me and my family) and he went to the doctor and my dog to the vet. The investigation was that easy because the neighbor confessed to have bothered my dog and made him angry. I won the case. They are good dogs but do not like to be pestered. The love to run, play games and do tricks. Remember to take him/her to the vet for all shots and register the dog with your local police who may have a dog registry for a small fee they make your dog a tag with his/her name, your name and address for protection.

I had them growing up and never thought of them as high-maintenance.
Pros: affectionate, intelligent, easy to train, great guard dogs, good with kids
Cons: only one: they can get too protective of small children, to the point of not letting parents or baby sitters pick the children up, but this response can be trained out of them.

well i think you asked the right person , i own two of them .
they are very good dogs, not easy to train,,can be stubbin
i think they can be family dogs, but my dogs are very much .one man dogs, mine are highly trained ,aka police dogs, ive not had many health problems at all . i find you need to keep them working at all times, if that means walking them late at night to tire them out, so be it , i find them very loyal, but can be lethal if not well trained ,will die for there owners, good with older kids, i respect them but, you must demand the same from them , they tend to shed a lot , they live to about 12 years , males are harder to train, female ,arent , may i suggest ,this site ,LEERBURG.COM
