satin was perfect in my house, or the next step down (even less glossy without being completly matte) is eggshell, and that's also good. They say to use high gloss in bath and kitchen but I don't like it even in there. I went with satin in all the rooms and it's lovely.

Have you considered using Matt? Actually there is a product from Benjamin and Moore called ULTI - MATT.
It is an absolutely gorgeous finish. It is very forgiving if you have less than perfect walls and it absorbs light beautifully.
It is a durable and you can clean (scrubbable) this finish as well as you can eggshell paint, not like the old Matt used to be like.
The True pigmentation achieved in this colour line is also very handsome.
A Satin Finish in reallity only means the "level of gloss, or lack there of in this case." Today, often you will hear "Low Luster" used for this terminology as well.
I personally would not recommend that you use a satin finish, as most of the other users have stated,as that finish is better used for your Trim.ie: Doors, Window Frames, etc.
A Satin or a Pearl Finish would be an excellent choice for you to compliment this ulti -matt finish on your trim work, being as you have stated that you do not like semi-gloss. (me either). It is also a nice alternative for your bathroom or Kithchen.
No good Designer is using the semi-gloss for these rooms any longer.
Ask a reputable paint dealer and they should be able to tell you the same thing and help advise you further.

It shines, but slightly less the a semi-gloss and may be cleaned just as easy as a semi. Flat paint hides way more imperfections in your walls and that is why most painters will use it in bedrooms, family rooms...etc.
Shiny paints are normally used in kitchens and bathrooms to guard against harder grease spots.
P.S. Eggshell is one step less shiny. It goes, flat, eggshell, satin, semigloss, gloss.
If your walls are in good shape (with no creases or dents) then go for it!

Yeah, Satin is really nice. We actually have it in all rooms of our house except the kitchen and bathroom. It has a richer look to it.

Yes - it would.
You need the satin finish for a good look.
Then you need it mainly for the living room as it is usually a good surface to wipe over for any marks.
Satin finish is my choice.

satin, also called egg shell is a great choice. Not overly glossy but a nice hard finish that is somewhat washable
