I'm not in anyway saying the bible or science is wrong, i'm not a Christian, i don't really know what i believe, i'm just wondering what Christians think about how old the earth is, because in a bible timeline i looks like maybe it could be around 5000 or 6000 years old, but in school you learn about rocks and other things people discover that are millions of years old. And also i always wondered about how the bible doesn't talk about the dinosaur age, i wondered what peoples opinions are about these things. and evolution, but i guess that it didn't happen, my mom is a Christian, i ask her sometimes but she doesn't say much. Thanks.

I think that knowing how long it has been since God supposedly created earth is important, if people want to know which is true, science or religion, because if it does say it is only thousands of years old, then it can't be true, based on what scientists have found.

Most things make sense in the bible, but the thing that always gets me is the dinosaur thing, the bible never says anything about a time where only animals lived on earth, without humans, or that there was a meteor shower that wiped everythign out, right? So i really just don't know. And the thing about a "day" probably not being a real day, but a longer period makes so much sense. Thats the thing about the bible that makes it so hard for me to understand and believe, because the bible wasn't written in english, so it was translated who knows how manys ways and times, so it shouldn't be taken so literally. But how do the people who wrote the bible know anything for sure? They could have made mistakes.

I'm a Christian
I believe the earth is around 4 billion years old. There are plenty of scientific evidence backing it up, and also, it dosent go straight against the bible if you consider 2 things: 1)The word "day" used in the book of Genesis to describe each day of Gos's creation in hebraic dosen't mean necessaraly a day, it means "a period of time" 2)The genealogies in the Bible sometimes skip generations (you can see Jesus's genealogy in Mathew, teologists believe there are some skipped generations there)
I also believe in evolution, and i seem to be an exeption amongst christians,at least here on R&S (and in my church too). I believe a lot of what is in the book of Genesis is allegoric (sometimes clearly allegoric) it dosen't mean i doubt a word of what is written there, i don't. Given the beauty of life the wonderful process of evolution, i don't find this view of mine hard to reconcile with a good active christian life.
The Bible is not a book about biology, Geology, Physics or chemestry, thats why there are no dinossaurs in it, there is also nothing about the law o gravity or the existence of photons, even though God created these things. The Bible is a book to inform us about our relationship with God and ourselves, and how to make it better, how to make it work. God knows we have no problem figuring out stuff about math, history and science. The stuff inside our hearts on the other hand, thats a little harder to figure out, and thats what the Bible (expecially the book of Genesis) is about.
Im glad to see you are looking for some awnsers. Search with open mind and heart and you'll find

I don't think it really matters how old the earth is or how long the galaxy has been around or a lot of other stuff like that. A lot of people get hung up on trying to pinpoint exact dates and timelines but I don't think it contradicts faith in any way.
Take the story of Creation from the Bible. Some argue that it happened literally just as it's read, 7 days to create the earth and everything in it. Some say that's a story for how the earth and everything in it was created but it's not meant to be taken literally as far as the timing goes. I don't think it matters. If you believe in God then you know He could have created it all in a split second or taken years to complete it.
As for how old things really are, I question science when they say things are a million years old, or 10 billion years old. We have absolutely no way of making educated guesses like that. We only know what we know about dating things (other than written documents) by a scientific method called carbon dating. That is something that we have discovered in the last 100 years or less and to take a method that new and base the dates of other things into the millions of years seems extremely assuming to me.
The writings in the Bible date back to many, many years before the birth of Jesus. But they don't date back "millions" of years when dinosaurs were supposed to have roamed the earth. That would only seem normal to me that there would be no mention of dinosaurs in the Bible because no one that contributed to the writings of the Bible was alive back then. The bible neither supports nor refutes the existance of dinosaurs.
As for the theory of evolution, keep in mind that it is a "theory" and not fact. I know schools teach it as if it were fact but it is called the "theory" of evolution for a reason. And, let's make the assumption for a moment that it were a fact and not just a theory, and that the planets and life and everything did come as a result of the big Bang Theory (another theory). That doesn't prove that God does not exist as some would like you to believe. My question to those folks is where did all of the gases and particles that were part of the Big Bang theory come from? And, where were they before the big bang? In space? Where did space come from and what made all of those things come together the way they did?
Rest assured that science is moving in a direction away from the Big Bang Theory and the Theory of Evolution to a theory of Intelligent Design, that some divine being must have set all of this in motion. They are getting closer but haven't quite reached the truth yet. Hope these things help. Sorry for being so long winded.

The scientist say the earth is billions of years old. I believe them. The history of modern man can only be traced back to around 5 or 6 thousand years. I believe that.
Dinosaurs died out millions of year ago. The "modern" men, that wrote the bible, only lived 5 or 6 thousand years ago and didn't know anything about dinosaurs. Get the difference?
It isn't that hard to understand if you read the Bible a few times. Good luck. Pops

The bible does not contradict the existence of dinosaurs. It doesn't speak more than it does about them because it is not a book about the different species of animals. Look up "behemoth" in a bible (in Job) or online at www.biblegateway.com.
As for the age of the earth, since I am a Christian and believe that Jesus was/is who he said he was/is and did/said what he was said to have done/said, I believe he turned water into wine. That was one of his many, many miracles. If Jesus can turn water into wine in an instant, a process that could not even happen in 1000 years, it is perfect demonstration of how something may seem much older (or different) than it actually is. Also, look at what the Lord created in just 6 days. It would appear that all of this would have taken much longer than 6 days to create. God can do anything. For whatever reason he wants, he can make things look older or different than they seem. How much more rewarding it must be for him when seemingly confusing issues like this are brought up and believers still have total faith in him. It glorifies him even more!

I have no idea how old it is. The bible is not a science book or a cookbook or an owner's manual for a '62 Chevy.
It is the revealed and inspired word of God containing the chief truths necessary for the salvation of man. Period. Nothing more nothing less. There are no secret numbers to bet on the lottery, and it is NOT a chronicle of mundane minutae, such as "How many days has it been since the creation, or how many days EXACTLY did that take. These facts are un - im - por - tant.

I'm a Christian who believes that the Fall of Man occurred about 6,000 years ago; but that time was not measurable prior to that event in the same way we experience now.
Ergo: Entropy and the "aging" process began in Genesis chapter 3.
Prior to that, there was a different law, a steady state law of the world, prior to that event.
I also believe that the formation of the universe has continued to decellerate. That time/space which Einstein proved is two sides of the same coin of a universal dimension, was "stretched" that there was a "gravity well" which was expanding from day one and that has now slowed down.
I also believe that the speed of light is not a constant, which has also been recently proven scientifically, lending credence to the theories above.
God did it in 6 days; but your attempts to measure that or disprove that, are futile because you weren't there.
Furthermore, scientists have used the same methods to "age date" the rocks from Mount St Helens eruption and found them to be hundreds of thousands of years old, despite the fact that we know it happened less than 30 years ago.

POPS, you are wrong: the Bible describes dinosaurs in a couple of places. The oldest book in the Bible, the book of Job, clearly references a massive animal with a tail as long as a Cedar tree. (eg. a Brachiasoarus or something on that scale).
Furthermore, some of the oldest non-biblical writings reference creatures that sound remarkably like Veloceraptor and Pteradactyl.

Do not believe I came from primates Darwhin is a quake.
I read somewhere that the in biblical times dinosaur bones were discovered. So...who knows save these questions for God he is the only one that can accurately answer them without hypothetical mumbo jumbo from scientists and professors. Never take your eyes off the Lord pray about these questions and ask him for guidance and then go to the Bible for your answers. SOunds crazy but it works. Like this:
I will pray out loud while holding the holy bible and after I will open the bible and since Jesus sits to the right of God, I always look on the right side of the page closest to where my thumb rest and usually find my answer in the text. Try it .

People who take the bible literal and don't open their eyes and actually read it, will tell you 6000 years....
someone who really reads the bible will tell you that God never told us how old the earth and only that in God's timing he created the earth in 6 days and in peter he explains that God's timing is VERY different then ours, Its LIKE a 1000 years...
but it never really states anything. The bible isn't a science book and was never intended to be, If God wanted us to have a science book he would have done so and we would be blown away, In science so advanced that Scientist now would be confused...
The bible is only for lessons on God and moral's and faith

i don't understand what you quite "have been given a preacher to declare" in context. If he particularly did say that there is a distinctive God on the previous testomony, then he grew to become into incorrect. I meant this would have occurred. Preachers are people and persons are sometimes incorrect. i think of it quite is a lot greater possibly which you're twisting his words, yet considering that I wasn't there i won't be in a position to understand. in spite of the incontrovertible fact that, I do agree that the recent testomony does teach greater love and mercy. the reason given interior the textual content textile is that Jesus died, grew to become into buried, ascended, and then the Holy Spirit grew to become into poured out. This adventure grew to become into expected interior the previous testomony. while it occurred, God's love and mercy grew to become into considered like never in the previous on earth. it is not that God replaced. it quite is that we've a distinctive courting with Him now. between the matters is that express Christians present a God that "loves unconditionally". They communicate purely approximately love and exclude commandments, justice, judgment, wrath, and hell. Their so-referred to as "love Gospel" does make it appear like a distinctive God. the reason being they are preaching a distinctive "God" that the only interior the Bible. If a individual isn't saved, then he will go through the wrath of God. We see this interior the recent testomony and a lot as a results of fact the previous. God bless you

Christians vary as to the age of the earth.
The Bible does not address dinosaurs but does allegedly refer to what could be dinosaurs.
Don't believe everything you are told in school.
Teachers are people too. They make mistakes and have a bias, just like anyone eles.
