Ok well, here is what I do. I get into a quiet room and say "God, i want you to block out every voice in my head. Block out things the devil might say. Block out my thoughts. Block out EVERYTHING. All I want to hear is YOUR VOICE." Then ask Him your question and He will answer you. If He doesn't answer, it means He is putting you through a test and the teacher [ Him ] can't give answers to the test until you get through it.

For me, God speaks differently. Sometimes I really do have to shut down the thoughts in my head because I don't know whether they are God or not and I don't want to claim something is what He said and it really isn't.
Your best bet, read the Bible. That's always the most secure place where you can be sure God is saying what He's saying. If He's really trying to get your attention regarding a situation in your life, He'll somehow lead you to a certain place in the Bible.
In my own experiences, He's:
actually spoken to me, shown me something through His word, gave me a feeling that I could not get off of me, allowed someone to say something to me that I knew could only come from Him, set the order of things in my life that I know only He could have orchestrated, and more.
He'll figure out which way is best to get your attention. Don't be caught up in actually "sitting still and getting quiet." That can be literal for some people, but for others (and it may be your case), sitting still could maybe only mean stop worrying about your situation and let God just reveal Himself to you.
Hope this helps. God bless.

You won't hear Gods voice audible. Sometimes it comes in a thought sometimes it comes in something you see. I use to prayer for bible answers and guaranteed the next day my question would be the topic on a christian radio show...got kinda freaky after a while. God will find away to communicate with you and you will know it's him. Keep praying and listening

Through contemplative prayer (two way communication) and a discernment process developed by the Jesuits. God also speaks to us through situations and circumstances we find ourselves in.
Peace and blessings

you have to pray and listen. i prayed for my father who was in a coma from a stroke. nine days.he had a lung infection and had a resuscitator making him breath and i heard a voice say Rub His feet.in my head. i got up off the floor and it had been five hours praying and it didn't seem like five minutes?. i drove to the hospital and rubbed his feet and he opened his eyes and lived well for 11 more years. My parents taught me how to pray. you must listen for the answers. but i have never heard the voice of the spirit of God so clearly before that's for sure. it was a very clear voice that said to rub his feet.you have to give yourself over to the spirit of God and let go of yourself . and look to God like a child does to his father have complete and undoubting faith.

Hearing God doesn't mean an audible voice, like when you're talking to a human friend of yours.
Let's read what the Lord Jesus Christ himself said about God, his Father,
John 5:37
"And the Father that sent me, he hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his form. "
SEE THAT?
YOU HAVE NEITHER HEARD HIS VOICE AT ANY TIME.
God speaks to men in many different ways.
Let's read Hebrews 1:1-3
"God, having of old time spoken unto the fathers in the prophets by divers portions and in divers manners,
hath at the end of these days spoken unto us in his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the worlds; "
GOD SPOKE to the fathers in divers manners BY THE PROPHETS.
One way in which God speaks to people is through his PROPHETS.
He is SENDing prophets and preachers of his words.
That's why a messenger of God, or a preacher sent of God SPEAKS THE WORDS OF GOD.
John 3:34
"For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for he giveth not the Spirit by measure. "
Just like Moses when he was sent by God.
Exo. 4:12
"Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt speak. "
And of course, the Lord Jesus Christ was SENT BY GOD and he was speaking the words which God commanded him to say.
John 12:49
"For I spake not from myself; but the Father that sent me, he hath given me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. "
WHEN YOU'RE hearing the preaching of a person SENT by God to preach, you will feel in your heart that the message he is preaching is God's message for you, and for his people.
Romans 10:14-17
"How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?
and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!
But they did not all hearken to the glad tidings. For Isaiah saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?
So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. "

I know this may not sound like a good answer to you...but when I asked God...I got a single word.....WAIT.
I can assure you that when He speaks to you, you will know that it is He. Perhaps you are trying to listen with your ears...instead of with your heart (spirit).

You have to believe it will happen. Oh, and atheists and some Christians believe that it has to be some grandiose spectacle, but rather expect a small voice.
