A name change is not a huge issue, but there are prople who have to be told you plan to change it. Most of those people are possible creditors, law enforcement authorities, the Social Security Administration, etc.
The way you do that is to petition the court in your county for the name change.
The court will direct you to publish your intent to change your name in the local newspapers, as well as any place you've lived before. You'll probably have to publish the ad three or four times over a period of several months.
Then, the court renames you.

If you do a Google search on name change and your state you will get the forms.
Fill out the forms and bring to the courthouse along with all the fees that are due.
If your request needs to be published in the paper (in Iowa it does not) you will be told by the clerk of court.
You will get a letter in the mail giving you a court date.
When you appear in court (or in judges chambers) and will be asked why you want the change. You may or may not also be asked some other questions about debtors, household members, etc.
It will either be approved or not.
You will have to file with Social Security, no charge (you must bring the original, legal paper from court regarding you name change). You will change your birth certificate at the courthouse (there is a charge for this), you must notify your employer and anyone else that will need with information.
My daughter did it and it was a piece of cake. If she went to a lawyer it would have been $400 plus the $100 court cost. She filed herself for $80.

It's actually fairly simple. Go to the courthouse and get the forms for filing a legal name change for an adult. Bring it back, pay the fees and they will set up a hearing. You explain why you want this done and they will change it.

It's a legal issue. You have to go to the courthouse and resolve it. There may be a slight fee.

The best way to handle it is to contact a lawyer and let him or her handle it for you. Then it will be legally done.
