Has anyone out there tried self tattoo removal products such as Tat be Gone and did they work?

My cousin tried a self removal product, I don't know which he used for sure. But I can tell you that it did not work. He said it was extrememly painful, it irritated his skin really badly, and eventually became an open sore that got infected. He had to go to the doctor for treatment and even after all that, his tat is still there.
