I recently moved to the DC area and am looking for some interesting things to do here. Things that are not the guidebooks or that really capture the Capraesque quality of the city.

There are lots of them - here's my list.

1. Go to the baseball game.
2. Go out to the national mall, but not to walk the monuments or go to the museums. Instead to jog, walk your dog, play frisbee, have a picnic, play kickball (or polo, or soccer)
3. Go to the Kennedy Center - in the guidebooks, but don't miss it.
4. Go to some of the other fantastic theatre in Washington - stop by ticketplace on 7th street (at D I think) to get half price tickets.
5. Stop into Bohemian Caverns near the U Street Metro Station
6. Shop in Adams Morgan, or around DuPont Circle.
7. Bicycle, Hike, or ride a Horse in Rock Creek Park
8. Visit the Franciscan Monastery, where the sights of the holy land are reproduced.
9. Visit the way off the mall museums, like the Kreeger or Phillips Collection, or Hillwood, that tourists rarely visit.
10. Go to the National Arboretum, or Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens

Enjoy a picnic along side the C&O Canal and check out some of the little artisan shops in Georgetown. Also it is rather interesting to take tours of some of the lesser visited government buildings such as the FBI, the Library of Congress, and the Supreme Court. You also might enjoy sitting in on a session of Congress. The latter can be arranged through your local congressman.

Check out Old Town Alexandria on a Saturday and stay into the evening.
There is a walking ghost tour. If you are on the water by the torpedo factory there are all varieties of entertainment.
You won't be bored - EVER!

Pizza is good, and reasonable, too.

Go sit on the corner and watch the drug dealers and murders. You know they elected a crack smoker for mayor. It probably be a great city if it weren't for a certain population there.
