I have one adopted greyhound and my husband and I foster greyhounds for an adoption group. Our S'Argent is SUCH a good dog! He rarely does anything he's not supposed to, but if he does, it's usually only one time and never again. We can't scold him harshly because he's very sensitive. If we even talk loudly he gets upset and will leave the room until things calm down. He's a very "clingy" dog, which we find charming, but they're not all that way. Our S'Argent loves everyone, but he's especially close to his adopted family.

Many people (myself included at one time) think that greyhounds are scared and aloof because they carry their tails low (that's just how they're built) and they don't always run right up to people (they like to get to know you a bit, which I completely understand and respect). Once they see you're all right, they're very loving.

All of the greyhounds we have fostered have been great dogs, they really have. They are usually completely housebroken within a day or two at the most, learn and adapt very quickly, and really seem to enjoy retired life and having their own special people. We would love to keep at least one more, but we already have three mixed breed dogs, so it's not an option at this time. It's incredibly hard to give the fosters up when they get adopted. I'm happy to see them get the life they deserve, though.

My only regret with greyhounds is that I didn't discover them sooner!

I don't have one myself, but good friends adopted 2 rescued greyhounds. Like most dogs of any breed, each has their own personality. One of their dogs was very nervous and timid, the other more outgoing. The timid one took quite some time to adapt to life outside the racing life she was used to. Everyone was happy together after the settling in period. Their only regret was that they both worked full-time and they felt they didn't spend as much time with the 2 dogs as they could. They had a fenced back yard, but sometimes the dogs would get out the front door and then they would run and run and run. We visited them a few times and the dogs were happy and well-loved.

I have three RETIRED greyhounds and love them to death. I am extremely happy (and think they are too!). My only regrets are that I don't have the money for a bigger house and car to fit more greys in! My family also fosters for our adoption group and we've had over a dozen foster dogs. Included among them were several greys that were rescued. One girl was 20 lbs under weight with serious skin and blood diseases. She was picked up by animal control from a private owner who maltreated her years after she had left the racetrack. We've also had private owners voluntarily give up dogs that they couldn't care for who I would characterize as 'rescues'. The dogs we get from the track are all in top physical condition with complete vet work, history, etc. - certainly not dogs in need of rescue! We actually spent last weekend at a greyhound reunion with about 400 other fast friends! The retirees had a chance to run on the track (just for fun) and they had a blast! The only thing better than seeing the happy pups race down the stretch was watching all of their friends bark and howl and jump and twirl cheering them on :)

One of the Vets I work with has two rescued greyhounds!! Mollie and Guinness!!! I wish we could just stop greyhound racing all together. It is so sad. Poor guys!

Mollie was a rescue from vet school (blood donor). She raced until she was about 11 months old, but she was not very good (shhh..she doesn't know), so they donated her to a local vet school. Guinness was adopted straight off the track and loves to run in a circle around her back yard! She practically made a perfect circle dirt track.

They come to work with her every single day and they are the absolute best! They have made me want to adopt a greyhound (too bad my dogs are too goofy and don't realize their size!)!

I love their personalities! They are really a riot to watch and are so loving and very well-behaved. I know she plans on adopting more! I guess greyhounds are like potato chips.... you can't have just one :)

I call Mollie and Guinness my 60 mile an hour couch potatoes!

The people at the dog park I've met with them have been thrilled.

One thing I learned that could be important is that the males are kept in the bottom cages, and the females may be kept in a higher/top tier. This means that the females may be more likely to jump. I asked a rescue person about this since we can only have 4 ft fences in my subdivision.

If you have a lower fence, you might want to stick with a male.

I do not, but was very close to a woman who started out with one from a rescue organization, and loved her so much, she got another one. She said they are very quiet as far as not being"yippy" like some breeds, and do need to have lots of exercise. She did say you don't want one getting away from you, and her fence had to be redone because they could squeeze through such small spaces.

Mine aunt and uncle have one and she is tons of fun. She does require a great deal of exercise but she runs with my aunt each day and loves it. She had trouble learning how to play but she eventually came around. Dont be put off if they dont want to act like overgrown puppies right away. But it is definately worth it to rescue such lovely dogs. Hope this helps!
