Just curious, my Pastor told us not to read Harry because of the witch Craft and the spells in the book really work, but a lot of Christians I know, go ahead and read the Harry Potty books anyways. What say ye, Mormons? And what about vidoe games, when I was a mormon, I couldn't go see "R" movies, or llisten to music with backmasking in it or some rock'n'roll songs that had drug referances.

I know mormons who do so... and I know so-called Christians who do so as well... your pastor is correct. The spells and the names of the ones of evil, in the potter books are very real... the author admitted this very early in the promotion of the book.. but when they became so popular the real connections to the forces of evil were downplayed and then ommited from further promotions... the author is an admitted witch... and the books amount to withchcraft 101 - 102.... The forces of evil are very real... I knew the truth of this long before I came to know The Truth of God... that is why I am absolutly opposed to the potter books... and have been since long before becoming a part of The Church.

We are encouraged to avoid things that could cause problems with our thinking. If someone reads the comic book series "Superman," believes he can fly, and attempts it, then there is a problem. Different things affect people differently.
Most of the "soaps" are as bad as "R" movies except they are not so vivid in details. Is it OK to watch "Days" but not "R" movies? "Gorillas in the Mist" was an excellent movie except one thing. They were constantly using the Lord's name in vain. This does not affect me, but I can see where some people would be tempted to curse.
One of my favorite movies is "We Were Soldiers... and Young." This movie shows a lot of truth about Nam. Any one of the events could make another movie. Yet there is cussing and violence. I don't feel like I need to kill someone. I don't have nightmares.
Statistically, Disney's movies are the biggest money makers. Hollywood wants to dictate what we watch.
A person should avoid things that cause impure thoughts. Thoughts lead to improper actions. This is why the Church says we shouldn't watch "R" movies. I haven't heard anything on HP or video games.

Video games only impact people in such a way if they are susceptible to suggestion. They do not make violent people. Violent people happen to play videogames, but that does not mean videogames caused it. In terms of children, parents must take responsibility. It is the parents purpose to raise their children and to help development. If parents cannot or do not teach their children the difference between fantasy and reality, they're doin a pretty sloppy job. Nevertheless, children imitate what they see, regardless of whether they totally understand it or not, and some children carry videogame experiences with them. Parents have to teach children what is appropriate behaviour, if they cannot, they are at fault more than anything else

This Mormon does not play any kind of video games nor reads Harry Potter novels. While the Potter novels may be viewed as entertaining light reading, playing videos is simply a waste of my time.
We are counseled to read good, uplifting books and to avoid those that tend to be immoral or of the occult.

Personally I think Harry Potter is just a story, I believe in Cinderella there is magic, one might argue "witch craft" Or is magic done by a fairy godmother better then a little boy and his friends? Almost all fairytales and fables have some sort of magic. We could go on to argue that certain cartoons might teach our kids about 'witch craft" might as well censor their whole lives now

Some do some don't..
Reading Harry Potter, seeing rRrated movies, what music is chosen, and whether or not a certain video game is played are all personal choices not dictated as right or wrong by the church..

If you aren't actually "doing" spells, then you aren't a witch. There's nothing wrong with Harry Potter. You're just a fascist that has sacrificed common sense on you're pastor's altar

I can only tell you what my brothers do, as I am not a part of the religion.
They do read Harry Potter, they do play violent (in my opinion) video games, they do listen to great music, but my dad still forbids them to watch rated R movies. Of course, now one is an adult...so I think he does whatever he wants.

that's one of the many reasons I have no religion, its like they are trying to dictate your life for you.. I like Harry Potter, and I am a whole lot stronger in the Lord than any dumb spell Harry Potter has in the book or movie..I watch R rated movies alot of them are good, if you can get passed the cussing and all the sex in it..and my video games i like em. and as for music I like Christan, oldies, soft rock, and c/w
and I am a believer in God.
