I thought you were talking about "Eskimo's", and thought,
what a great question ! They could not have ever been in
the water, they would have frozen in seconds. ha

Dogs are like people, some swim and some don't. I have had dogs from "swimming breeds" that refused to do more than wade in the shallows and non water dogs that love to swim. It is often more of an individual thing than a breed thing. Life vests are a good idea and let them determine their own comfort level as to whether they want to swim or not.

All dogs know how to swim instinctively. Whether your dog is a swimmer or not doesn't just depend on breed, it depends on the dog's temperament. I have a German Shepherd who loves to swim and a Border Collie who hates it. As long as you introduce the dog to water well, he should enjoy swimming. Make sure you teach him how to get out of the pool on his own, in case he ever falls in. I have heard of dogs accidentally drowning because they didn't know how to get out and they were exhausted from swimming.

Absolutely!! I've got four who love to swim...but they're just like kids...you can't take your eyes off thm...and you need to teach them where the steps are. Just remember when they fall in, and they will, they will try to get out where they fell in, and they generally will NOT think to swim to the steps until you remind them. And don't panic if they fall in. They are very good swimmers, so as long as you're there to pull them out, they'll be fine.

yes, all dogs can swim but it just wont jump in and know how to swim so you will have to watch him and help him learn by gradually introducing him to the water. First you can take him in about two feet and let him swim back to the steps.

Yes, but any dog can drown if they fall in the pool and don't know how to get out. If you have a pool, always train your dog how to get out. Even if you don't want him to swim or if he hates to swim, he must learn how just in case--I know of dogs who have drowned because they panicked.

Throw it in and find out.

All dogs can swim to a certain extent, it's best you find out in a safe controlled environment before it chased a duck in to a river and find it can't swim.
