Why are you Atheists? This is not a hate or discrimination question I just want to know what has happened in your life that has made you want to be Atheist? What do you think happens to you when you die? And, I know that everyone has had those weird moments when something happens that can not be explained...what do you think caused them? One more thing: do you believe in Karma or anything such as 3 fold, goes around comes around ect. ect.?

What happened to me? Well nothing...my mother didn't have a religion, and never told me about one. I have formed my own opinions. And again never said I was a believer...so stop taking this as an insult...it, well like how you view God...it isn't.

Damn! I'm gonna watch how I word things..scratch out "happened to you" part since most are offended by this. It was an assumtion that some were born into a different religion family, and something happened such as, knowledge, hate, wisedom, what have you that made you think different.

Nothing spectacular happened in my life to make me atheist...I just never believed. My parents didn't raise me to be Christian, they just rose me to be a good person. So, even when I went to church as a kid, the whole ordeal seemed sort of silly to me (no offense--that's just my opinion). I think that, when I die, that's the end--and that's the way I'd prefer it to be. What's the point in life if you have paradise at the end of the road? Since this is the only life I have to live, I make sure I live it to its fullest. I actually haven't had any weird, unexplained moments or coincedences. Which helps contribute to my atheism, to be honest--nothing extraordinary has happened to me or anyone around me, so I find it hard to believe in things that are, likewise, supernatual. And although I don't believe in karma persay, I do like to think that bad people will get what's coming to 'em. But, sometimes, life isn't fair and justice isn't always served. Sometimes bad people have good things happen to them and good people have bad things happen to them. Unfortunately, that will never change.

Atheists...Why...?
Why are you Atheists?
Very very very simply, I do not believe any deity by any name ever existed or will ever exist outside the imagination of man..
This is not a hate or discrimination question I just want to know what has happened in your life that has made you want to be Atheist?
I did not want to be Atheist. Research and logic however taught me that all deity(s) in the past were man made to explain natural occurances that man did not understand, Vulcan became obsolete when man learned the mechanics of volcanic eruptions etc. The deities of today are no different than the deitys of the past the only purpose is to explain what is not understood to those unwilling or unable to look for the real reason.. Because f this and many other reasons I came to the conclusion that no deity exists or ever existed outside of the minds of man.. Therefore I am Atheist...
What do you think happens to you when you die?
Nothing.. After death there is no consciousness, that dies with the biochemical brain.. The corpse decays.. end of story..
And, I know that everyone has had those weird moments when something happens that can not be explained...what do you think caused them?
Flukes happen all the time, just because I am unable to explain it doesn't mean I attribute it to a deity.. All it means is I can't explain.. Not everything needs an explaination especially when a fiction has to be created to explain it..
One more thing: do you believe in Karma or anything such as 3 fold, goes around comes around ect. ect.?
No.. there is no cosmic scorecard of good and bad.. I believe in treating others with respect and kindness because I have found that doing so encourages them to recipricate in kind which I like..

Nothing happened in my life that made me "turn my back on god" I do not have a belief in god. There is no proof for a god. Also the fact of god saying that the only way to get in to heaven is believe, it doesn't matter the type of person you are, so long as you believe is so, ludicrous and unfair that it makes no sense.. When I die, I die. The end. What I make of life is the here and now. In a way I believe in the concept of karma. If you do good, good will come to you. Simple really. If you treat people good. they will treat you good, if you are kind to them, they will be kind to you. Not always true, but for the most part people are good. How terrible to baggage them with sin when they haven't done anything bad.
Oh, and the weird things happening that can't be explained. The mind, the brain is an amazing organ.

Here's what happens when you die -- you sit in a box and get eaten by worms. I promise you that when you die, nothing cool happens.
— Howard Stern
Re your question: "I know that everyone has had those weird moments when something happens that can not be explained...what do you think caused them?"
I never have those. Everything has a logical explanation without having to resort to the make-believe. There's also something called coincidence. Man gets into trouble trying to infuse meaning into a life that has none. It's part of human nature to make order out of chaos and believe everything has a reason and a purpose.
"I don't think we're here for anything, we're just products of evolution. You can say, “Gee, your life must be pretty bleak if you don't think there's a purpose,” but I'm anticipating a good lunch.

Atheists are either people who need conclusive proof before they will believe anything or they have studied a lot of different religions only to discover a quagmire of lies, hypocrisy, manipulation and contradictions. Pretty hard to believe when even those who do believe can't agree on exactly what it is they believe, let alone put it into practice. Don't regard atheists as somehow being deficient. Just because what you believe you see as the only truth doesn't mean it is.Faith, like everything else is in the eyes of the beholder.

I lost my faith when I read "The Diary of Anne Frank". At that time, I was a very devout Methodist girl, reading the Bible every day and praying all the time. Anyway, as I read the book, my heart really felt so much sadness for Anne Frank and what she experienced. She was a beautiful person inside and out and suffered a horrible death. Christian doctrine says she'd go to hell for not having Jesus in her heart as her savior. On the other hand, a Nazi guard could repent on his deathbed and go to heaven. I then decided that the concepts of heaven and hell were not based on reason at all. They were just tools of control used to keep people from leaving the religion.
I studied the Bible more thoroughly, read apologetics websites, asked questions to my preacher, and slowly realized it was all based on lies. When I found out the pagan origins of many Christian traditions, my eyes really opened. I also can't force myself to believe in the miracles of the Bible, like the great flood, the creation story, or the rest. I can not believe the earth is 6000 years old, that a guy with a sword coming from his mouth will come down from heaven to bring believers to paradise, or in the divinity of Jesus.
After I die, I believe I will cease existing. There was nonexistance before I was born and that is where I will return.

I have seen no evidence for the existence of God.
Saying that the world exists because God created it is like saying that you get Christmas presents because Santa Claus flies in from the North Pole and brings presents every Christmas.
There are plenty of story books all over the world, and the Bible, Koran or any other religious books are just that - stories.
Unfortunately, most people expect their children to have the same religious beliefs as themselves and so they drill it into their kids before they have seen the world and can make educated decisions for themselves

Read the literature, heard the sales speech, decided not to buy.
When I die, I'm dead. That's not a major problem for me.
Causes of the unexplained - personal ignorance of at least one pertinent fact, no more, no less. I don't blame that ignorance on martians, leprechauns, or God.
Don't believe in Karma, but do believe in the power of the human emotion called "guilt" which has a remarkable resemblance to karma.

A god is just too improbable. Nothing significant happened in my life, I just came to this conclusion after some time of thinking.
It is hard to accept, but I'm quite sure there is nothing after death. You didn't exist before you were born and you won't exist after dying. Otherwise death would make no sense to me.
Still unexplained things are a challenge to explore, not something you just shove aside with a 'god did it'. This way we wouldn't have invented the wheel yet. ;)
Well, that's just my opinion, you asked :)

I'm an atheist because I think it's complete bull that people believe that this one all knowing being controls every single thing that happens in the world, from someone dying to someone turning left instead of right.
Also, there's so much counter-evidence to disprove all the things that god supposedly does. I mean, it was thought that thunder and lightning was caused by god but thanks to science, we know there's a scientific reason behind it.
And yes, I do believe in karma just not that god has anything to do with it.
