She doesn't look purebred, and most likely isn't, if there are no papers. Do not buy that dog if you are looking for a purebred. Chihuahua puppies in St. Louis generally go for $400 or more. I think she might have some Jack Russell Terrier mixed in. She is also quite large for only being 9 weeks old. Look at her size compared to the lady's hands. I don't trust the people selling her. But she is an adorable puppy. Why isn't she with her parents still? The person selling her is obviously not the owner of the father and mother, so what is she doing with the puppy? Unless you absolutely fall in love with this puppy, as she is, don't buy her.

You don't mention how old your kids are. I have 2 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and they are fantastic with kids but unfortunately they are so tolerant that kids tend to use them as toys in some households. If you decide on a CKCS you might find that a good breeder won't let you have one if your kids are under a certain age or will want to meet the whole family and really vet you. Go to a shelter and see what they have there if you're not too bothered about breed, they'll all have been temperament trained. Whatever you do, please don't buy from a shop or someone who offers to meet you with the pups - it usually means they have come from a puppy farm - if you know nothing about them then do a google on them and look at the images :~( Good luck with your search I have grown up with dogs and had them all my life, i prefer them to people but the only dog I would not recommend with kids is a toy or miniature poodle or a Jack Russell Terrier as they are really snappy. There are more dog bites from JRT's treated in UK hospitals every year than any other breed but as they are so small the press doesn't pick up on it and just goes for the aggressive rottie stories. I had a GSD when my kids were little, she was a failed police dog and tbh she was fantastic and looked after them like they were her pups (though I would NEVER leave a small child alone with ANY dog!).

I do not think she looks like a pure bread. But she is cute. I wouldn't give her 250 for her. You could spend $250 on a dog and get papers if that's what you want. It sound funny that she said a re-homing fee. We are talking about a loving animal. Not property at a store. Any how I would ask to see the fathers papers. That way you could get a hold of the breeder and talk to them about the dog. I did see that she got a copy of the fathers papers. It easy to get copy's of some one else dog. Is the dog fixed? Does it have its shots? If it does then I would give her no more then $100. That's around the price that it would cost to go to a shelter.
I hope it works out..
She is cute..
I all so agree with Kayte about where the dogs come from that are sold on craigslist. and pet stores.

I'm not sure if the pup is a purebred chihuahua, but if she said that the father had papers and the mother doesn't, don't take a chance. The pup may be coming from a puppy mill, cause I work in a pet store (I'm only there for the animals sake), and our puppies don't have registration papers and we're told to tell the customers that they are purebred without registration papers, and if they ask furthermore, we are also told to tell them one parent is registered and the other one isn't. However, the employees and myself doubt they come from a breeder, because why would a breeder spend so much time making sure the puppy is healthy just to send it to a pet store, which they don't see a vet.

I would say it is not pure bred. At 9 weeks the ears should be standing. The most predominate feature I have seen in a Chihuahua is very large eyes. That pup does not have the big bulging eyes. I have a Chi/Rat Terrier mix and the only way you can tell there is Chihuahua in him is the big eyes. I would not pay that much money for the pup. I got mine free.

The face definitely looks like a Chihuahua, but I've never seen one with droopy ears before (adults have pointed and upright ears). It also looks like it will be long-haired, not smooth, though there are plenty of long-haired Chihuahuas out there. Since she doesn't have papers, you couldn't breed her and register any puppies, so if that doesn't bother you and you like the dog, get her. If you want a guaranteed purebred, don't buy one without papers regardless of how much it might look likie the breed.

Scammo, and a purebred chi is worth so much more than $250. Find a breeder, who can offer papers, or settle for this puppy who looks far too large to be a chihuahua.

Thats not a dog, it's a rat
If you are worried about bloodlines, I'd suggest you go to a registered breeder. That way you a guaranteed it's a pedigree and the breeder is in it to improve the breed as a whole rather than their bank balance.
I personally hate back yard breeders as they never take into consideration know hereditary problems that the parents are passing on.

Leaving aside the question of whether it looks like a pure-bred Chihuahua, I urge you not to buy animals off craigslist or from pet shops. They are usually from puppy mills, in poor condition, and have behavior problems due to the miserable conditions under which they are raised.
A 'rehoming fee" should be about $25.00, not $250.00.

If being a purebred is that important, you're not going to find one for $250.
If it doesn't have papers, no one knows for sure what it is. If you get the dog, just know you're not getting a chihuahua.
"Scam" is not a breed of dog ;)
