because ingredients in chocolate can be toxic to your dog.
It does vary from dog to dog - my vet admitted that after I freaked when my dog got part of a candy bar.
But it is never a good idea to GIVE chocolate to your dog. You do not know what your dog's tolerance is for chocolate and at what point it can/will harm him.

Well some chocolates aren't as "chocolate" as others. Most of the ones you buy at the check outline barely pass as chocolate..
A finer grade of chocolate could kill him faster then the 49 cent candy bar.

But it will build up in his system like alcohol.
Most people don't die the first time they drink...it takes yrs. Some people can drink for 20 yrs before it catches up to them, some get a bit too much one night and end up dead... You just don't know what will happen when you turn that drink up..

Same thing with dogs and chocolates

Why would you risk your dog's life for some chocolate? There are plenty of doggie approved chocolate flavored treats, surf the net! But DON'T give your dog chocolate!!!

If you dropped a small piece on the floor and he ate it, no it most likely won't die, but it shouldnt be given as a treat or anything!

Not all chocolate is the same. Some have a small amount of theobromine (a naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle). Another type has a large amount and still another contains an amount that is somewhere in between. The quantity has a relationship with the weight of your dog. Small dogs can be poisoned, it is easy to understand, from smaller amounts of theobromine than large dogs.

Please DO NOT take that risk of feeding your dog any chocolate. I understand that it might make you feel happy to feed your dog chocolate, but one day it might very well kill him in a slow, horrible death.

Some dogs do die from eating chocolate. There's a toxin in chocolate that can build up and be lethal - the more you feed chocolate, the worse it can get.

Simply put, "they" say dogs die from it because dogs have died from it. You may want to change your treats.

Enough people have beaten up on you, so I'll skip it. My dogs have gotten into my chocolate stashes and are fine (min pins). I won't feed them chocolate because it is possible they could die from an overdose (if they are allergic) and I couldn't risk it.

And, the darn chocolate is for me!

Since your pup loves the taste, try getting some carob chip based treats. Your Chi won't know the difference, and you won't be tempted.

I HOPE HOPE HOPE you just put this post up to get a rise out of people, because if you are seriously giving your dog chocolate you are an uninformed and selfish owner. Example: cigarettes are bad for one's health, but won't necessarily kill everyone who smokes, so by your logic you would allow your kids to smoke as long as there were no VISIBLE side affects. Like I said, I hope you were just messing around, I'd hate to think anyone this incompetent is responsible for the life of another creature!

It depends on your dogs weight and how much chocolate he ingested to become toxic. That's why it is not recommended at all, why take the risk?

Try some dog treats, dogs love all kinds of stuff, not just chocolate, and your pet wont care what it is they recieve as long as its good so its your job to make it healthy as a responsible pet owner.

wow, just because he's not dead yet doesnt mean that he wont die from it. suppose he dies from it in 5 months, i bet you'll feel smart. it can cause seizures and alot of health problems. do not let him have chocolate! give him real dog treats, they cost less than the chocolate that your killing him with!
