Although there are NO calories in diet soda, some recent research has shown that even diet soda can cause a spike in your insulin levels. This can signal your body to store as FAT any further food or drinks that DO contain calories.
On the other hand, if you are on a low carb diet, a little caffeine to keep your motor running can be a good thing.

There was a study done by Sharon P. Fowler that showed that people who drank diet sodas gained weight. CBS news has the article. In a nutshell it says that people are changing their drinking habits but not changing their eating habits. This is why they gain more weight.
As far as I'm concerned, if you want to lose weight avoid sodas all together. They have lots of calories, sugar and caffeine, even if they are diet. For example that enviga has way too much caffeine. (That article is in ABC news)

It's not the diet soda that makes you gain weight, it's the false sense that you're doing something to offset the calories in the other food you're eating. 8 years of research done by Univ. of Texas Health Center showed that drinking diet soda actually increased the risk of obesity. The data, from WebMD, is at the site below.

Just check your totally calorie intake a day. You dont just drink diet soda to replace an afternoon snack. You put out so many calories a day, if you eat more, you gain weight. You eat less you will eventually lose weight. Not a starvation diet.
But maybe you should look at different things. Maybe non-sweetened iced tea. Has as much caffiene, but no calories or sugars. Its a negative calorie drink. You burn calories just drinking it. But you still get your caffiene fix.
