It'd come off better to me if he said something like "Lets have a picnic, or relax and I'll make you a nice meal and we can watch some movies" but if he straight out said "Sorry babe, I'm broke" I don't think I'd be really turned off, providing he still tried to have a good time with me doing something inexpensive.
Money doesn't mean everything, some girls just wanna have fun.

Yeah, your alternative would be the ideal, romantic response.
To some degree, many girls would be turned off. I think it seems like the guy has a lack of ambition, maybe spends money wastefully, and isn't creative enough to come up with another option.
Don't let it get to you, though. Maybe he's just young or is saving his money, or maybe he's being responsible with the money he does have.
One last note: Why does he have to pay? If you are the one who wants to go out for a nice dinner and movie, then can you treat? If not, then you shouldn't expect him to either.

my boyfriend has a part time minimum wage job and has to pay child support, so he never really has money and i know that. But i love him for him,not what he can buy me,or whatever. So when i can afford it, i treat him to a movie and Japanese. Otherwise, we're perfectly happy with Burger King and Blockbuster or a home-cooked meal and a TV movie. But, no, i'm not turned off. There's more important things than money.

You women always complain that you want a man who is honest with you. Well, here is a man who is being honest and you guys are coming down on him.
And.... this is 2007, not 1957. If you want to go out with him, and he has no money, you can pay. Guys are really snowed by that bec very few women pay anything, let alone carry their share of the money load of dating. If you don't really want to pay, or can't pay, and he has no money, then if you want to be w him, do something you both can afford.

No, at least he take the effort to spend time with you and not just say he don't wanna go out. Hey, you gotta understand not everyone's wallet is filled with cash all the while.
Do you like him for who he is or do you like him cuz he's got cash?

Rather have him say he preferred cooking and watching dvds. It would be sweeter and cuter than saying 'Hey babe, sorry we can't go out tonight, I don't have any money' Don't you think so?

If your worth it -expect to be provided for-ok Yes your worth it and this is what helped me to see my value too=true love is the answer, yet most people look for it first in the wrong places. what helped me most as girls do like me is to know who I am from within=persue it cautiously-dont let your heart go out -let true friendship grow and see where it goes
this helps too to think about ahead of time
there is no set way to build a friendship- everyone is different and every circumstance is different-care is a needed. realizing that one doesnt need another to be happy, and in truth if one can not be happy within themselves they will never stay happy outside of themselves.
what helped me the most-was the help of Jesus to my heart and soul-and letting him build my self esteem to know within that true happiness comes first from him. John 3 repented of my sins (even one lie) and born again with Jesus in my heart as my best friend once I asked him in (Revelation 3:19&20) "I love you and ask you to repent of your sins, Behold I knock on your heart door to come in and deliver from sin and be your friend, when you ask me in."
so I prayed-"Jesus I am sorry for my sins (even one lie is a sin) come into my heart and help me, be my friend, amen."
praying for you, relax life will go on, and soon you will see it is better than ever, and that there is importance in a guy who will honor you in Jesus -and as Jesus promises "once you believe, I will never leave you nor forsake you." Hebrews 13
prayin for you-for Jesus perfect will, David

Not a turn-off unless it happens over and over again.

If I really like him, I'm not turned off. If I'm on the fence about him, then I would be.
