I just got my liscence and my friend told me that car insurance is more expensive for 16 year olds than 17 year olds because they have increased chances of getting into an accident. What are the average rates of insurance for sixteen year olds and is it worth waiting until I am 17 until the prices drop?

I agree with the previous answers, but would add a few ways to drop your insurance rate.

If you are a good student in school, let the insurance company know, many offer good student discounts.

If you haven't taken a drivers ed course, do it. I was amazed at how much inpact one accredited drivers ed class saved. The savings paid for the course.

Make sure you ask the agent if there are any other discounts you may qualify for.

Do not just go with the cheapest insurance. Some insurance companies just don't pay claims well, and the savings will hurt in the long run.

Actually, your rates will remain high until you hit your early 20's, however, they're still cheaper than male rates! The best thing you can do is just call and insurance agent, ask them to provide you with a quote and ask what the difference will be when you turn 17. They'll provide you with all the options for coverage and help you get the best rates.

What some teens do is add themselves to thier parents insurence. Then after building a good driving record with the insurance lets say the time you finish high school and go to college, you'll have affordable rates.

I don't think there's that much difference between 16 and 17 with the cost of insurance, and please, don't try to drive without it. One accident could ruin your chances of ever getting cheap insurance, to say nothing of the fact it's against the law to drive without it.
