Honestly, you can be white and poor and not be white trash. White trash is based on how people present themselves and choices they make. My family was poor, but we kept our house clean and nice, spent money sensibly, and did educational things like go to museums. We had less money than a lot of "white trash" families, but all 3 of us kids turned out okay...one is an electrical engineer with a master's degree, one is a psychologist, and I'm a financial analyst.
The difference is, we chose to work for what we have and better ourselves. White trash seems to be more content and sometimes even proud of how they live, and why feel sorry for that?

Sympathy should never enter into any of it. Empathy yes, meaning there is some type of understanding for the plite. I know plenty of my average black neighbors. They are people who have crawled out of the Housing Projects in Chicago, and have moved into my neighborhood. These are people that have had to use every program there is out there to get what I have had all my life, a home with a back yard for my children, and a school system that just might let them get a life. More power to them! But, as well there are new neighborhoods going up not far from my home that the cost starts at 750k, and there is not a white person who lives in one of those homes. These are black attorneys, doctors, professors, bank presidents, etc. Once again, more power to them. The rumors that go around because a black family can afford such a home is they have 5 families living under one roof. No giving credit where credit is due. These black families were tired of the status quo, and decided to go to school and change it, and they did. Once again, more power to them. I like living in a mixed neighborhood and enjoy the differences between people. What about poor white trash? They have had the same opportunitys and ability to take advantage of the opportunitys much longer than the blacks. I think they had alot of complacency and the attitude I have all I need. It is not a matter of drugs, drink, it is a matter of why do I want to work any harder than what I do. I have a roof, good food, good neighbors and I am happy.

Neither deserves sympathy. They created their own misfortunes and I'm not going to feel sorry for a person or group of people that can't stand up and say "F*** this, this is not how I want to live" because contrary to popular belief, just about anyone is capable of adopting that mindset and doing something positive about their situation.
The reason blacks get more sympathy is because they were 'slaves' way back when and they feel (and quite a few people agree) that white people have created this lifestyle for them, by segregating them (how long ago?). They need to get real and figure out that there is no such thing as segregation anymore, and yeah, even though prejudice does still exist is some respects, that its not just blacks that get the brunt of that prejudice.
White trash doesn't get the sympathy because its obvious to the general public that they have created that life for themselves, with drug abuse, promiscuity, and alcoholism. Truth is though, like I said before, anyone that doesn't stand up and take control of thier own lives doesn't deserve a tiny bit of sympathy, no matter what color they are.

I wholly agree with 'mothra' unfortunately our society caters to Anglo-American whites that's why quota were invented. I think if a white person puts forth the effort it is simply easier, in most situations, to pull themselves out of poverty or low-income situation. Hey, I'm white and I know plenty of people that are happy being the white trash leeches that live off the system and feel they are just geting their due. I am certain that is this way in every ethnic group, but I am white so I feel it reflects apon my race in a negative way.
And "White Trash" is a term that describes a lifestyle not an economic status. I know plenty of 'growers' (pot) that make 10 times my salary but live like they have nothing.

I don't know, why can you ridicule a Christian, but make the same comments to a Muslim or Jew and you're life can be on the line?
Same reason you hear Newfie jokes, but none from the other regions of Canada? Same reason Redneck jokes are funny but using the "n" word can see you in serious trouble.
Easiest way to look at it is Political Correctness. It is a curse of an otherwise intelligent society.

Every person that is born in this world, including me, is born with an equal chance to make something of themselves, color or race makes no difference. It just depends on the person. I listened to an interview of a black person who was brought up in foster homes, was homeless with a small child, got a job in being a broker, today he is a millionaire and owns his own brokerage firm. Look in our own government there are many people of different races and color who have made something for themselves, our service academies have many men and women going to them and some day will be leaders like Colin Powell. What a person does with their life is their choice just like what you do is your choice.

Most adults in this country that live in squalor and poverty in this country do so by choice. They make poor life decisions, lack self control, and typically abuse alcohol and or drugs. It doesn't matter what their race or ethnic background is. The only people I feel sorry for are the children of these low-life's. The children deserve better, and when people of poor character have children, they typically raise them to be people of poor character as well, and the cycle continues.

to add to your argument have you ever noticed disallusioned middle class white kids (emos, punks, goths, school serial killers)aren't supposed to have any problems? "oh but they are from a fine upstanding family" blah blah blah. granted white kids usually don't have crack dealers on their porch but why is everything supposed to be awesome in suburbia? its creepy and overly uniform and they spend too much time doing things like blowing cut grass off the driveway.
i think anglos in the united states are supposed to live in a world of denial that theirs is a perfect life if you are donald trump or live in a trailer. that they live in a trailer instead of turning out like donald trump is the problem of the trailer trash and they did it to themselves -- the great white culture had nothing to do with them being poor so screw em.
by the way if you talk to any economist they will tell you that citizens of the united states pay way too much for two things -- housing and transportation. housing really has no bearing on anything other than your conceptions. statistically nobody lives longer or better because of their housing choice -- ditto transportation.

i feel you. i'm mixed too (mostly black, but with white) and i think that's effed up. and the reality is that alot of white people's ancestors never even enslaved people cuz they weren't in that area.
i know alot of black ppl that feel the same way too. but one thing about ppl feeling bad for the 'ghetto blacks' is that it makes ppl think that ALL blacks are poor.
so there are advantages of it as well as disadvantages.
i have talked about this with my friends and when it is coming from a mixed person, they listen more. so i have changed some ppl's opinions when it comes to this situation. just tell ppl about ur opinion, and maybe u can make them see how wrong they are.
