Interesting question. Most of your questions are. Do you have any points left Sean? I am curious.
Anyways...I think, and this of course is just my opinion but I feel that the thought of an afterlife is probably as old as time itself which is as infinite as God is. Also, sex was probably the only thing going on through the human mind. Cause it is about the only thing ever going through the human mind really.

probably in the same fashion as ice salesmen to Eskimo's
creating a niche where none existed before, generally as stupidity and gullibility increase, so does religion and talk of an afterlife conveniently merging with financial "love offerings" to the beggars
all beggars teach that you should give, to them

cause they wanted to believe it. they wanted to believe that death wasnt the end. they probably saw something in the sky or something happened that they thought it was a powerful being telling them something, but really it was nothing. they thought alot of things that are now proven wrong. they thought the earth was flat, they thought the sun was a god. humans believe alot of things until they are proven wrong, unfortunately no one can prove death because no one has died and came back. i believe in the future all gods will eventually be forgotten and hopefully theyll be actual evidence of where we came from.

Adam and Eve lived in a Garden where God supplied everything, especially protection and provision. The Tree of Life was in this Garden and it sustained eternal life, but Adam and Eve disobeyed God and lost eternal life with Him.
Jesus went to the cross, died and resurrected and gained eternal life back for us.

I don't think there are even historic documentations when that began. Probably a very Pre-Historic idea.

probably since the beginning of time, or at least the point where beings had emotions and the intelligence to think about the future, since anyone who's lost a loved one would probably wish they could see them again.
