Rockefeller Center is a great place to visit during the winter, when the huge Christmas tree is lit and ice skaters are doing dance moves on the ice. During the summer, you might have sculptures there and flags plus crowds of international visitors. If you are willing to pay the steep price of going to the Rainbow Room at 30 Rockefeller Center or you want to go inside the NBC building, then Rockefeller is the place. The view from the Empire State Building, however, is breathtaking. It's worth the long wait on line to see the panoramic view of the Manhattan. I would go to the Empire State Building if I were going as a tourist.

Rockefeller Center is really cool, but the Empire State Building is too. However, the Empire State Building has HUGE lines.
It took me like 2 1/2 hours to get up to the top. And it can sometimes be foggy.
Rockefeller Center is cool, and I really liked Radio City Music Hall if your into that kind of stuff.

I am a tourism student at NYU. Go to Rockefeller Center!!!!!!! It is cheaper, the lines are much shorter and the view is so much better. The view up the Empire State building from the Top of the Rock is one of a kind. The Top of the Rock is a few stories shorter but you you get to see both the Empire State building and central park. Seriously, there is no comparison!

Rockefeller Center.
Plus youll get a great view of the Empire S.B. from the top of the Rockefeller.
I went at night and I'll never forget how beautiful the Empire and Chrysler Bldg looked all lit up...I could say more but dont wanna spoil it. And dont forget to look for Central Park.

There are two decks, when youre on the very top one, theres nothing blocking your view, no glass etc.. and thats what probably made the view so stunning.

I went last year on a Thurs and I got right in, NO lines..but, I dont know if this will be the case for you.

I've been to both. It also depends on what part of the city you want to see unobstructed. If seeing Lower Manhattan interests you, then the Empire State Building is where you want to be. Top of the Rock is off to the side a bit from the ESB, but its not obstucting the view as much.

If you want to see Central Park, The Bronx, and Uptown unobstructed, then you want to be at Top of the Rock. The Empire State Building obstructs the view of Lower Manhattan. The Flatiron building and a good chunk of downtown cannot be seen.

Top of the Rock also has a mini museum in the lobby that might be of interest. But the Empire State Building is a classic place to be.

If you purchase Skyride tickets (which they usually sell in line of the Empire State Building) you can get right in, usually. But the price of the Skyride is the same price as the same as a normal observation deck ticket.

Both places also I believe (Empire State Building for sure) allows you to purchase tickets online, but you still have to wait in the security line.

Empire state building is pretty cool. but it could take you at least 2 hours to get to the top. Not sure what you want to do at Rockefeller Center so I can't say how long it will take.
