Whenever my grandma is on the road, anytime a big rig truck is behind her, the driver honks. I've ridden with her on several occasions & even when she seems to be driving normally, not switching lanes or anything - they honk.
I've taken a look at her car - all the way around. Lights, brakelights, turn signals, tires, everything - nothing is wrong with her car unless it's just something you can't see until it's in motion.
Any clues to this honking mystery?

This has happened every time I have ridden with her on the freeway - so I have seen it when she is driving normally - at a normal speed, & not doing any stereotypical granny driving. lol

What I was taught years ago when I got my CDL was to honk the horn and flash your lights when you are about to pass a slower vehicle. That is to make sure they look in the mirror and know that you are coming around them. I have not done this in years, as it always scared the stuffing out of my grandma.

Have you been driving or riding for years, or are you a relatively new observer? Have you ever ridden with your grandma and someone else other than family?

There may be something other family knows about, but not want to say anything to avoid getting into an arguement, while a relative stranger might be less bashful.

You could stop at a truck stop and ask the question.

Are you particularly beautiful? Your family may be biased and not able to answer this ... so ask someone who is not a family member ... it could be YOU they honking at.

Although there are posted speed limits, a lot of people exceed them, particularly trucks on hills ... they go fast up the hill, so they can get up the hill ... they go fast down the far side because they have bad brakes.

If someone in the way, they honk to say "I want to get past you." It does not matter if you driving legal ... they want to get past you.

When this honking is going on ... how busy the highway?
I mean if there are no other vehicles around, then this 18 wheeler appears behind you, and honks, it stands to reason the driver is saying "Hey wake up Grandma, pay attention, I want to go around you."

They are probably just idiot "cowboy" truckers that think granny is driving too slow.Just try to avoid them,or let them by if possible.Stay safe.
Unfortunately it seems that these days almost anyone can obtain a CDL.Personally,I believe an I.Q. test and a minimum quotient of 95 should be part of the requirements to obtain a CDL.Too many bad truckers on the road.

You might get in another car and drive behind her to see if you can see anything. That is what I would do.
People are so rude sometimes. It is probably making her nervous. Hopefully you will figure it out.
She could be driving to slow. Is she doing the speed limit?

How fast does she drive? Does she drive at or above the posted speed limit? Or is she below the speed limit? If it was something visibly wrong with her car, I would expect that one of those truckers would have tried to let her know what it was.
My guess is that she drives too slow for them.

she is old (grandma) so assumption would say she is probably a cautious driver and probably is driving slow
