The guy that answered the question first is wrong. So wrong.

You need an outdoor TV antenna (rabbit ears DO NOT EVER work) the has a great UHF range. Acceptable ranges for Seattle would be 45 mile UHF or 90 mile VHF. As for DVD, just get an acceptable player like LG's combo that has an HDMI port. Then get LG's HDTV, with the HDMI input.

BAM, all DVD's playing at at least 720 rate. You'll only get local channels that available in HD, but thats dependent on your area.

If you get a good quality TV (Plasma or LCD) then watching a DVD will be great regardless if you have cable or not. I have heard rumors that sometime in the near future they are doing away with "Air wave" TV broadcasts. They will be using those frequencies for police radios and other emergency purposes. Again, that was a rumor I heard not to long ago. I didn't think much of it at the time because I didn't think anybody actually used Antennas anymore.

You do not need cable to get HD. The local stations that have HD service, also broadcast over the airwaves in HD. If your HDTV has a tuner and is in an area with a good signal, you can get HD broadcasts from the local stations with just an antenna.

Actually, lvillejje is wrong. Antenna broadcast HD service is currently BETTER than cable or satellite as far as picture clarity is concerned. As to DVD, Blu-Ray or HD players aren't quite as clear as the same image broadcast over the air nowadays, believe it or not.

Go to this site http://www.antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx
and put in your address; it will show you all the digital stations you can receive and what kind of antenna you need. It is possible to get digital reception with a good indoor antenna (Zenith Silver Sensor) if you are close enough to the stations transmitters, but most often an outdoor antenna is needed.

i have an hd TV and currently no cable...movies yes they come in wonderful, but good TV without cable is hard to get especially with a big screen. so you really aren't going to get good quality TV without the cable

yes it is possible...my dad got a tv and there's a selection called DTV...it gives you clarity picture...but sometimes, it doesn't get any signal...so you have to watch it from the regular TV channel, but most of the time, you can get clarity...btw, it only works for local channels...

Nope. if you want HD it has to be through cable with an HD box. Otherwise you just have your antenna channels which sometimes come in clear but nothing like cable or satelite.
