It can be, but I don't mind the sweet.
It's because Bourbon must be aged in unused oak barrels (which are frequently charred on the inside). Oak contains a lot of natural sugars and flavors which is imparted in the Bourbon.
Scotch is almost exclusively aged in used barrels...frequently used Bourbon barrels. Since a large portion of the wood's sugars have been extracted by the bourbon, the Scotch takes on more of the woody and spicy characteristics that remain.
I like each for their unique qualities...I don't mind sweet drinks, but I like a nice spicy Scotch, too.

Yes. But I have always liked a good Scotch. Just can't afford what I really like. Scotch in my opinion only comes as good or bad. Other whiskey can be good, really good, bad, or OK. Sometimes ugly.
Not too long ago I read that Bourbon makers are working more on different styles to attract a bigger market especially outside the USA. The sweetness was one of the qualities specifically mentioned.

Not fair to compare scotch to bourbon. Sometimes one feels the taste for one and other times the taste for the other. And other time the taste for somthing completely different. Try a wonderful aged rum like Gosling family old rum.
