Currently you don't need a passport to go to the Bahamas, however you have to have applied for one. Go to your local passport office, it's one of your local post offices, and apply right away. Then you can go to this State Department website and print your official passport receipt:

http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html

With this receipt and your drivers license you will be fine to travel.

Standard passport delivery is currently taking 15 weeks and an expedited one 4 weeks. However you can make an appointment at the nearest Federal Building, wait a several hours in line and get it that day if you want. An expedited passport costs $60 more than a standard one and a "same day" cost about $150 more.

Expedited service, takes about 4-6 weeks(?). Contact your local passport office for details (includiong extra cost!). Additionally, call your travel agent (or, contact the Bahamian Consul on-line) and ask what exactly is needed to enter the country.

You need to apply pronto. The state dep't currently has a "flexibility " plan for people who will not receive their passport on time for their flight. You must first APPLY, then save the RECEIPT for the application, then FOLLOW the instructions for the "flexibility' program. To the the website below to get info on how to apply, print out the forms, and get instructions for the "flexibility' program. Start now and you should be ok.

Yeah, it takes 3-4 months regularly or you can get it express (costs an extra $60 or so) and get it within three weeks.
