All the Romance languages are close related, but not similar. They inherited more than 60% from the words from latin and much grammar, but there are now great difference in grammar and lexic, basically under the influence of the substratum and due the borrowings from foreign languages. People living in different parts of the Roman empire were speaking almost the same language, namely vulgar Latin, but after the fall of Rome, that vulgar Latin evolved different in each area and after several centuries became another language. However, from a linguistic point of view, it could be said that all Romance people still speak the same language, because there is not an exact date when Latin was over and they started another language.
