I have this open bottle of probably 10-15 year old whiskey, and I was wondering if it is still good/safe to drink. It's been in a cabinet in its box, with the cap tightly closed on it. I pretty much forgot about, until I started cleaning up today. Only the neck of the whiskey is gone by the way.

So is it still good to drink?

It does get bad. Once it has been opened, the evaporation process begins. The taste gets bad and the proof (percentage of alcohol) increases. Bottoms up....but not with the old stuff

It is still drinkable. With an original alcohol content of 40% or higher it cannot support the growth of any harmful organisms.
If the cap had been loose enogh to allow evaporation it would be different. The alcohol content will go down not up through evaporation. Alcohol evaporates faster than water.
Also be aware that whiskey does not improve with age after it has been bottled, unlike wine. Tne alcohol content and lack of enzymes prevent this.

I once bought a bottle of Jack Daniels, had a few drinks and put it up. It was a few month later when I went back for a drink, and after a few sips I was sweating, had a fever, and my face got very red. It had begun to ferment in the bottle.

If your bottle was still sealed I'd say no worries, but since it has been opened you don't know what condition it is in. If you live in a cool climate it could be fine, if you live in a warm climate I wouldn't risk it at all.

If you decide to try it, take a sip and see what happens. You might even try contacting the maker to get their opinion.

30 Year Old Whiskey

Whiskey has about 40-50% alcohol which acts as a preservative. It won't be "spoiled" (as in "rotted") but since it was already opened, the quality won't be the same. It should be safe to take a small sip - just don't expect much.

The bottle neck is gone as you say.It is likely that the fine glass pieces may be in the whiskey. So don't be foolish to drik it and cut your internals. The cost of the lousy whiskey is not worth your life. OR IS IT ?

Mira yo creo que no va a estar muy rico, mas bien va a saber feito porque ya está pasado de estacionamiento. Por las dudas no lo consumas a ver si te intoxicás!
Muchas suerte!

I have 30+ year old bottles of liquor. Some are opened, some aren't. I've been too scared to touch it.
I wish I knew for sure, too. Good luck.

hey Cheapo,
spend $20 and get yourself a new and updated version of the whiskey. Maybe a new can of coke (one that isnt made of steel) too.

Drink up! I've had opened hard alcohol for several years and I've never died from drinking it. If nothing else, it's gotten more potent. Drink with caution!!
