If the punishment is to fit the crime, then an eternity in hell should be reserved only for the most unimaginably heinious acts. Yet the christians tell me that I will burn in hell simply for not believing as they do.

I think Hitler should burn in flames for one full day for each death he was responsible for. That seems horrible.

But...god would bring it up, 5 billion notches X infinity.

I know many will disagree with this, but the concept of hell fire and eternal torment are symbolic, not literal.
God is just. His justice can include death, but eternal torture? I think not.
The term came from an ancient area called the Valley of Hynnom. (My spelling is likely to be incorrect.) also translated as Gahenna.
At one time the Hebrew nation, during one of its several periods of straying from the true faith, built idols in that valley and made sacrifices to them.
One action taken to prevent the pagan practice was, the idols were destroyed and the vallev was turned into a garbage dump. Fires were kept constantly burning by adding sulfer, also known a brimstone in Old English.
The ONLY things thrown into that pit were things you didn't want to recover, like carcuses of sick dead animals, garbage, or worthless trash. Junk yards were used to dispose of things that could be recycled.
Interestingly enough, they believed in a resurrection of he dead and burried the dead accordingly, but the bodies of criminals that were executed for "unforgivable" sins or crimes had their bodies thrown into the pit, they would not be recovered or resurrected.
Those people receiving that message of scripture were familiar with the valley and the symbology. They new it meant that their lives would end and they would have NO HOPE for a resurrection.
Our distortion of that knowledge, or the desire of the "Church" to put the "FEAR of GOD" in you prompted the current teachings.
They don't understand that the quality of goodness is a gift from God and fear alone, without other motivation (such as the love of God) will not prevent anyone from doing wrong.

Once again, hell is really nothing more...or less...than the grave.
Eventually, death and hell will be destroyed in the lake of fire.
Who gets tossed in there with them is really up to God.
I do know that Heaven is reserved for those who have trusted in Jesus...
My own thought is, since He is making "all things new", that would include the entire cosmos. Perhaps there will be a place for you, after all.
Once again, however, it isn't up to me, but God, to make the final disposition.
It makes me sad, to think that there will be people evil enough to be destroyed forever...but again, He has promised to wipe away all my tears.
What can I say?
Come, get to know Jesus.
I think you might like Him...

every person who might condemn a feeling being to an eternity of suffering without desire of reprieve, needless to say merits the kind of sentence himself. The God of the Bible is in Hell. he's the only individual who has ever deserved that.

Sin is opposition to the will of God, you and every other human in this world are guilty of this almost all the time.

This crime deserves an even greater punishment, destruction of all Creation but God has had compassion on the world and made His covenant with it.

If you don't accept Jesus as your savior. It's kind of a get out of jail free card. I think it's silly that you can be the worst person every - commit a ton of crimes your whole life and then accept Jesus and everything is washed clean. I don't get it.

We all deserve it. We may rank sin as human beings, but it's all the same in God's eyes. Thankfully, God's grace means we don't have to get what we deserve unless we just insist on it.

"the Christians"?
I have never told you, or anyone else, that they will burn in hell. I belong to one of the largest denominations in the world, and our official position is universalist.
