I just got my retainer today. We weren't sure what the dentist said. We weren't sure if he said to take them out at night or leave them in. The problem is..they're closed. Please answer and hurry!!

You should definately WEAR your retainer tonight if you just got your braces off today. Be sure and call your dentist tomorrow to find out his instructions in full. Trust me, I went through braces when I was younger, and I am dental hygiene school.

I used to wear a retainer. You remove it everytime you eat, brush, and sleep. It doesn't necessarily hurt that much when you place it back into your mouth. But it might after you wake up and put them in your mouth, only because it has to readjust. So, no, it doesn't hurt a lot at all. I hope this helped.

I wouldn't suggest that you take them out because I think you should start to get used to wearing them. If you insist on taking them out, it might be a bit sore or that you feel that your teeth are jammed in the retainer and you feel crowded. I had retainers and still wear them today. I wouldn't take them out unless I eat, brush my teeth, or that the orthodontist tells me so. Hope that helps.
