I think dachshunds are the best. They are good watch dogs, at hunting, tracking, and preforming tricks. They don't need much grooming, don't need trimming or stripping. They have short fur, need very little exercise, and are fairly active inside. Good for apartment living, does all right without a yard, do well in most climates, and live long. They are moderately protective, moderately dependent on people, and their dominance is moderate. They are friendly with other dogs, and generally good with other animals. Personality: Lively and Affectionate. Proud and Bold, almost rash. Tenacious. Can be willful and clownish. Curious and Mischevious. Very Clever. May Attempt to train the owner rather than allow the opposite.

I would have to go with a Rottweiler at the top of my list. My boy is big, beautiful and so very smart! He loves everyone he meets, and is well on his way to being an ambassador of his breed. I will never live without a Rottie, that is for sure. I love everything about the breed. They are stubborn and headstrong, and are not the dogs for everyone... but I think they're perfect. =)

German Shepherd Dogs are 2nd on my list; they are regal looking, loyal and massively intelligent. My GSD is turning 9 this year and she is an absolute doll. She barks when she feels like she needs to let me know about something outside, but that's the extent of her "protection" or much else. She is perfectly happy laying in the bed or on the couch with me.

Pomeranians round out my top three, just because they are cute, quirky, fun little dogs. They're not without fault, by no means, but if you get a well bred pomeranian, the face will do you right in. I miss my Frank pom dearly.

Doberman Pinschers
Incredibly intelligent, loyal, obedient and gorgeously beautiful.

I have a Dobie. He learned to sit, lie down and bark on command in one day. He is perfect on the leash and around all people, kids, cats and other dogs. He is simply spectacular. I will never own another breed.

I have a Keeshond and I must say she is the most loyal dog I have ever had. She is sweet, was easy to train and still is. She is protective over me and my husband. A great family member!

Oh and she doesnt really shed, I just have to brush her fur occasionally.

you can go on-line to www.akc.org and research breeds. what is right for one person is not right for another. For instance, my grandma has 2 poodles, my mom 3 German Shepards, we have a Cairn Terrier, a Chi/Jk Russel mix and a basset hound/Aus. Shep mix and each of us could say that we have "the best" dogs.

If you want a very snuggly dog with high maintence probably a chihuahua or terrier. If you want a exercising dog with low maintence probably a lab or retriever. If you want a little of both with no maintence go with a pug!
