Nothing!
Poverty is a relative term used to mean some people have less money than others, which will always be the case, unless all money is held in common, which will never happen.
What we can do is minimize the effects of this difference of income, like on how much people have available to eat, to wear, to get medical care, etc. There are a lot of different ways to deal with this, from government assistance to volunteerism, etc.

I'm sorry but getting rid of poverty could cause a lot of problems. I know it can help put money into the country etc etc but gettign rid of all pverty would be wrong think about it for 3rd world countries eradication poverty and their debts would mean that these countries can then grow and do you think their governments are going to spend money on the people? Nope they will spend it on building up their defences their armies etc and for more developed countries like Britain an dthe USA this could cause problems and more warfare. I think the problem has to be tackled by giving the people what they need to live not funding th egovernments giving them water giving them food the essentials to live without being over worked this way we are not eradicating poverty but helping the country on its own rigt!

Education is the best weapon against poverty. Not in the sense that educated people make more money, but by educating people to inform them of the CAUSES of poverty.
I specifically mean universal education. Education for every sex, race, religion, nationality, etc... teaching governments and citizens alike what leads to poverty and what perpetuates it.
This is the only way. Traditionally the poor and middle classes blame the rich i.e. "We are poor cause they have taken all the money and opportunity," and the rich blame the poor. "You are poor because you do not work hard enough and are too lazy."
Neither of these answers are correct.
Educate the world and you begin to truly fight poverty.

After WW2, Europe was rebuilt thanks to the Marshall Plan.
A massive investment plan designed to rebuild roads, factories, schools, hospitals, all destroyed during the war.
I think if the members of the G8 were to devise a similar plan aimed at creating and developing productive infrastructures in Africa, South American and South East Asia, those high fertility regions of the world, would rapidly evolve as highly productive and competitive industrial countries.
Now, we wouldn't want that, would we?
As for charity, as much as it comes out of a good thought, doesn't tend to eradicate poverty, but sustains it, maintaining the poor in a everlasting position of need.
It's actually in the bible: give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day; teach him how to fish, he'll eat for the rest of his life.

It depends what you mean by poverty .if you mean third world poverty people in the west should educate themselves about what their government and big corperations actually do to poor countries under the guise of giving "Aid" the fact is all the rules and restrictions that their "Aid "comes with makes the donor country richer and places the recipient in a position where their own economy can never recover .

Jesus said ' the poor you have with you always.' Although we can help to reduce poverty by embracing the free marked system. The socialist and communist systems of redistribution creates only two classes, that would be the poorer, and the richer. In an open free market you can become as rich or as poor as you want, with out government interference.

Well, for starters, the Vatican could open its coffers and give back to the less fortunate.
Or, we could create a welfare system that actually worked to get people back off welfare, we could compel a living wage from employers, and we could improve education systems so that our children aren't doomed to failure.
Third choice, and the most popular at election times, is we can stand there and shake our heads sadly at the plight of those less fortunate than us, then hold huge fundraising dinners at $500.00 per plate to fund our campaigns so that we can be elected, so that we need to campaign for re-election, so we need to throw more fundraisers (see a pattern?)

send the illegals back home and make the able bodied people who live on welfare actually work for a living. We could also put the kids on summer break to work
Back when I was a kid I got sent to the fields to pick veggies and fruit. Teaches kids work ethic and gets them off the streets. its the whole reason kids have summer break in the first place.. its either that or get rid of summer break.

Not possible.
Their will always be a segment of the population that lives in poverty for multiple reasons. You can reduce this number but you cannot erase it.

1st, we'd get rid of the useless douche bags that keep asking such redundant questions (LIKE YOU!)
2ndly, we'd have to get rid of capitalism, & install an incorruptable socialist system... but humanity is far too greedy & ignorant for such an idea to be plausable. so let's face it. the only way to vanquish poverty is to GET A JOB!
