Every now and then during a long drive you get a whiff of some awful smell and then it eventually fades, what is that?!

The smell is probably from the catalytic converter. When you are on road trips, you required more power out of your engine, consequently more fuel through the converter. The catalytic converter may have been overheated with extra weight or the type of terrain of the road trip causing it to work at less than 100 percent efficiency causing the odor.

It could be anything in the area that's causing the odor, and as you are traveling away from the smell, the smell fades. This happens with pretty much any smell, and as long as the source of the smell isn't traveling with you, it will (almost) always fade.

But it also depends on whether or not you're downwind from the smell (such as a chemical plant) or the like.
