I know they are, but some of them seem to completely lack some of these stereotypical features like selfishness. And I live among environments that imply cats.

I know that, but they do have human traits and they have an accentuated sense of awareness unlike other species. I'm not judging them, just analyzing them.

Yeah, tell that to my cats. As soon as I feed them and their satisfaction is confirmed it's almost as if I'm invisible. Lol.

Yes, I do believe they are! What else would anyone call coming to wake me up at 4.30am, just to be rubbed and stroked, but being selfish or spiteful? My one cat does this every morning, and once I have put the light on, sat up, and stroked her, she gives a self satisfied "chrrrp" and leaves, or cuddles down and goes to sleep, leaving me wide awake. She demands brushing when she wants it, and doesn't give up until she gets it. She also screams for wet food 4 or 5 times a day, although she sometimes won't eat it, and will eat the dry stuff instead! Now if that is not selfishness, I certainly don't know what it is!

I wouldn't considered them selfish. They are just independent, and have the minds of their own. People probably wouldn't consider a cat that brings home a half-eaten lizard as being generous; probably wouldn't consider a cat that always returns home as being loyal to the family; and would probably take it for granted when the cat tolerates all the "harassment" by the family kids. They may not kiss you after you give them a great meal. But that doesn't mean that in their mind they are not saying they love you and are not grateful that they have a family like yours.

My cats aren't selfish I think it may be partly in the owner were the selfishness starts in cats. I tended to feed my older cat a little sample of whatever i was eating while he was a kitten. Now that another cat is in the house he shares his food with the other. Theie treats aren't shared namely cause the one likes fish and the other likes chicken. In fact the older cat dosen't even care if i take food and treats away from him.

Sometimes I think my cats are but they have a routine when its time for them to eat so I really wouldn't call it selfishness. Its only when I'm trying to feed them they are being selfish. Like telling me to hurry up and put the food in the dish. I wouldn't consider the three kittens I feed who live outside selfish either. They're just trying to survive.

I think the answer to your question is "yes" as in "Yes, most or ALL living beings are selfish". If the question you meant to ask was "is the average cat more selfish than the average person" then I think the answer is no. My cat is gentle and has never scratched or bitten me by accident or on purpose. He brings me presents all the time (which I praise him for and then dispose of). I think if he were selfish, he would keep these tasty treats for himself!

I have had my cat Simba for 9 years. Whenever I had an argument with my ex-boyfriend, my cat would come to me and not leave my side for a few hours. He always made sure that I was okay. No I don't think that they are selfish at all.

No.
I know this because of an experience I had several years ago.
I was feeling kind of depressed and I lay down on the sofa and spent about 20 minutes moping.
My kitty-cat, Shavara, came by and jumped on my chest. Then he got his face about 5 inches from mine and looked me deeply in the eye.
In a mystical moment I knew he cared about me and wondered why I wasn't being my normal self.
I know this sounds retarded, but it's really true.

I have never met a cat that was a catatarian. Other than protecting their kittens, cats think they are gods and behave like Paris Hilton.

i dont think cat's are any more selfish than people. think about it.....when your hungry, you must go eat. same with cats. i think that cats definitely have the capacity to love a person or at least really enjoy being around someone.
