We had to upgrade to XP for a similar reason.
Go to the Microsoft website and you should be able to find a tool (piece of software) there that you can run on your PC that will tell you whether your present machine is able to run XP or Vista.
Run the tool and see what it says. If all is well, then buy the upgrade.
If your not particularly computer proficient, I'd ask a friend who is, to help out with upgrading the operating system, since you can run into problems that will leave you with the computer not running or some essential piece of software not working right. Most important, back up all your photos, music and other documents to CD or DVD before you upgrade, just in case it goes badly.
Bottom line is you probably need to upgrade either your operating system or computer system sometime soon since Microsoft is no longer supporting windows 98 anyway other than for the most egregious security issues.
Good luck!

Most likely not... you can sometimes find software to trick XP into thinking it's something less, but I've not seen anything that can reliably trick software into thinking you have something "newer"... the best bet is, as many have said, upgrade to XP...
I would check the web site... sometimes they'll have a beta or "no longer supported" section where you'll find older drivers... but be ready for minimal to no support with it.
If the camera is fairly new, you'll probably be stuck. If you're a "complete geek" you might find someone working on a driver for Linux... in my experience, the Linux fanatics are VERY good about creating drivers for things that strike their fancy, but it will likely require a kernel recompile, so expect to put some effort into it.
You may still be able to find 2000 licenses on eBay, and in my experience, CDW is usually competitive on the cost of upgrade licenses to 2000 or XP; bottom line is expect to upgrade or do some digging with Google... there may be some others working on something, but don't expect all of the bells and whistles.

You can purchase the Windows XP upgrade
I would question whether it would work on a 98 machine however as the machine is likely undersized.
The Digital camera may have Win 98 drivers at their web site so check there before you retire the Win 98 machine.

Not legally.
Most Win 98 computers run like cr@p with Win XP because they are very slow. If the processor is slower than 1GHz forget about it. 2 GHz and up XP runs good.
To upgrade to XP
XP Pro $150
1GB Ram $80
Cheap new video card $70
======================
Total $300
But you still have a slow Pentium III processor, no DVD burner, tiny hard disk.

Your PC with Windows 98 may not be able to support WindowsXP. Check the specifications of your PC against those required for XP. I have a Pentium III in the closet and was told it would so much to update it, that it would make better sense to get a new one. You can get a new PC for $299 with WindowsXP installed. Try Dell or HP. You may hit it on a day when they offer free shipping. That's how I got mine. I doubt you will be able to download WinXP anywhere at no cost.

If you are willing to give it a shot, I would recommend installing Ubuntu ( http://ubuntu.com ). It is a free open source operating system that will always be free and all the software it comes with is free. It is plenty times faster than Windows XP or Vista. Why would you upgrade to XP anyways? It's eventually going to be like Windows 98 and not be supported by Microsoft.
