Sounds like a silly question, but I remember as a kid having to go to "the dump" and drop trash off. I never hear about people going to "the dump" anymore.

There still are dumps and you can still dump your excess trash and recycling there, usually for a fee. Just look in the phone book or call your local garbage company.
However there are fewer dumps than there used to be, because they fill up and it's hard to open new ones, so the trend is toward fewer but larger.
Also they tend to cover them with soil when a section fills up, so you no longer see huge piles of trash, but innocuous looking hills dressed with grass and often turned into a park with hiking trails. For instance

I live near Sacramento, California. I know of two landfills and a transfer station within driving distance. All three of these facilities are open seven days a week expect for holidays. We also have a twice yearly transfer station open in my community as well as weekly garbage pickup including recyclables and yard clippings.
With all that available to the people I still see piles of trash along the river of just off rural roads.
It's sad... Some folks will do anything to save a couple of bucks. It's too bad the cops can't catch a couple of these morons. Too busy at the donut shop I guess.

Yes, it still exists. All the trash that gets picked up by the trash truck that comes to your house goes there. And if you have some large items I guess you can still go there and dump them yourself, for a fee, just like in the old days. But I haven't done that for years.

Yes it does but now its called a landfill because dump is not a good word and politically correctness demands this new title for the dump.

Yes, huge ones still exist. It's just that few actually go to the dump themselves because our standard of living continues to increase.

Yes it still exists but it is a bit more tied up with red tape than it used to be. Now you have to say what you are 'dumping' and sign for it. You then sort it out into materials and put it in the appropriate skip! Very sensible really. Just a huge recycling bin.

yeah my grandparents have to take trash to the dump. It's not just a trash heap though there are a bunch of metal storage containers.

I'm from the mid-west and a lot of the landfills are being made into golf courses. I'm not sure what I would rather see them become, but the clean land is very valuable to sell for housing developments, so golf courses on clean land are being closed and sold to housing developers. (I don't like golf or golf courses.)
