"Believe what is written and pass this information along and good things will happen. Ignore this message and bad things will happen"

Fits the bill for both Christianity and a Chain Letter.

What's the difference between religion and superstition? There is none.

I have to say that some of these responses so far are hilarious.. "Yes but the difference is that if you don't believe in Christianity than something REALLY BAD ACTUALLY WILL happen".

Don't see the similarity myself. All books are chain letters if it's on the same topic and each agrees with the other. I guess a book is like a letter to the readers, but you usually have to buy your own copy. I can see how you can't learn much about the Bible by listening to people. Sometimes popular beliefs about something are really off, I used to think ninety five percent of it. Now I see a lot of truth is what people pass on so I don't know, but the knowledge about the Bible is way off. Even if you read it a thinking mind needs some help understanding it and few can help you except to garble it more. Have you looked into any other religion or sacred texts? They are just dealing with human values and presenting some standards for human interactions. Morality can't be legislated, but people need some sort of rules or guidlines. It's not bad to look for meaning above the mundane or reach for a higher goal. It seems to be human nature. Can physics really tell you about feeling and human concerns. Aren't they a bit different.

from a christian's point of view the difference would be that christianity tells the truth and chain letters do not. except that you don't get into heaven by simply sharing the information in the bible. you only have to believe and ask forgiveness. it's not about the good things you do in life. i guess to you that all just sounds like crap, but it's not fair to criticize someone's religion.

religion is a way of life for people. i guess you could say that about superstition as well. but with religion - or at least christianity - it's not just mini consequences like "7 years of bad luck", it's an eternity in hell. but if you choose not to believe it i probably can't change that. =)

The difference between religion and superstition is that religion has a basis on reality, something tangible. Superstition is just that, super...beyond what is real.
As for Christianity, the message is there, you can choose to believe it or not. Nobody is forcing you to. It's kinda like the speed limits on our highways. They are there, you can obey or ignore them. If you ignore them...bad things will happen. You can get tickets, or wrecks, or worse.
But if you choose to ignore the message, it does not change the fact that there are consequences for ignoring it.

:O

I've never thought of it like that! xD

superstition:

Noun
1. An irrational belief that an object, action, or circumstance not logically related to a course of events influences its outcome. 2. a. A belief, practice, or rite irrationally maintained by ignorance of the laws of nature or by faith in magic or chance. b. A fearful or abject state of mind resulting from such ignorance or irrationality.

religion:

Noun
1. a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe. b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship. 2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order. 3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.

There is, as you can see, a difference. They are similar, but not the /same/.

Don't forget the paragraph where it says "so-and-so had the letter, but didn't send it on, and something bad happened to him."
