Me and a roommate planning on moving to the city. Our chance of being in Manhattan is low because of cost of living. Safety wise, which is better Brooklyn, queens, or staten island (not moving to the bronx)

I believe it is Staten Island, although there is crime no matter where you go. It all depends on the neighborhood.

I don't know why you are so againest moving the the Bronx but it depends on the neighborhood moreless not the borough.

The person that said that Staten Island is better in the north and gets worst going to the south you have that backwards. Northern Staten Island is rough, parts of Stapleton are bad, St. George's is pretty rough and Mariner's Harbor is a very dangerous neighborhood in Staten Island.

All that said the safest parts of each borough I would say I'll go by borough:

The Bronx: A good majority of the south Bronx is pretty rough, with Soundview, Hunts Point and Morrisana being the rougher of the neighborhoods. The north Bronx is nice though Riverdale is a great neighborhood, Woodlawn is pretty safe for the most part, Morris Park is safe, Throgs Neck is safe. There is nothing wrong with living in the Bronx. I live in the Bronx.

Queens: It depends there are some areas that are crime ridden and some that aren't. Jamaica for the most part is one of the more crime ridden sections of Queens. Parts of Ozone Park are bad, Elmhurst is crime ridden in spots, Hollis is pretty bad. Moreless the southeast corner of the borough is bad. Astoria is nice, northeast Queens is nice, College Point, Whitestone, Bayside, Little Neck those are all safe.

Brooklyn: This is probably the most crime ridden borough of them all. Much of eastern Brooklyn is pretty dangerous, certain neighborhoods such as East New York, Brownsville, Bushwick and Bed-Stuy are very rough areas of Brooklyn. Now Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Park Slope and areas around there are pretty nice. Canarsie is a nice area as well.

Staten Island: As I mentioned before Staten Island's problems lie more to the northern part of the borough around areas such as Mariner's Harbor, Stapleton and St. George's (where the ferry lets off). Other then that going south isn't bad at all.

Manhattan: Like you said the cost of living is outrageous. Crime ridden neighborhoods in Manhattan are in the northern part of the borough.

It's the area in the borough. For example, Little Neck, Queens is safe and clean as Long Island. Then you have parts of Elmhurst that is crime ridden. Same story in Brooklyn, depends on the neighborhood. Overall, however, Staten Island has the lowest crime rate as a borough because it's very much like suburbia.

That all depends on you. Crime has more to do with chance and a persons perceived vulverability.
