adopt a cute smaller mutt. they are cheaper and are sweet. my dog was adopted too and he is just the sweetest thing ever. do yourself a favor and do not waste your money on a pure bred when you can have a cut adorable mutt that needs a home.

I would say that you should get a Scottish Terrier. They are very friendly little dogs and they are good around people. The only drawback that I see is that they bark a lot. My neighbor owns one. However, you must take into consideration that every dog, even the same breed, is different in their personalities. I would recommend that you go and personally look at dogs at your local shelter before you buy one off of the Internet just so you can be sure the dog is compatable with your family situation.

Finally, your little dog is going to need a lot of attention and nurturing when he is new to the household. With 11 kids, you will have to focus a lot on that. But, they are easy to maintain and train. Good job on choosing to get a dog by the way. You made a good choice.

The biggest issue is the fact that you have toddlers in the house, which don't mix well with smaller dogs that can be easily injured by rough little kids. You might wait till they are older (say 5 and up) if you want a little dog. Of the little dogs, I really like Cavalier King Charles Spaniels - they get to about 20 lbs and are sweet, easy to train and very people-friendly. Not big barkers either.

A larger dog that might work better now would be a golden retriever. Also sweet, friendly and easy to train and a better size to handle rough toddler play.

Both Black Labs and Golden Retrievers get to be around 70 pounds, but they have the PERFECT loving, patient temperament for a bunch of people!

I have a Golden, and she ADORES kids--she can NEVER get enough lovin' from anyone, and she is as gentle as a lamb.

Take a trip to a local shelter--some of these mixed-breed animals up for adopyion are the best dogs of all...they inherit the best traits from the parents, yet never the bad things that come from interbreeding.

Good luck...dogs & kids are a great match, and whatever animal you find to join your clan will add tons of love and FUN!!!

There's tons of dogs that would be good. Most dogs are medium sized. I would get a young dog from a shelter, and bring the family there to meet the dog and see how he does. You want a dog with a personality that is outgoing, happy, and not afraid of anything. No guarding breeds, no toy breeds (not good with kids). Breeds like lab, pit bull, terriers, collie, those would be good.

Beagle (Medium) Beagles are gentle, trustworthy and patient with children of all ages.

Basset Hound (Medium) Basset Hounds are sweet and gentle and love everybody, including children.

American Staffordshire Terrier (Medium) The American Staffordshire Terrier is very affectionate to family members, including children, and to most strangers.

Boxer (Medium) The well-bred Boxer is gentle, fun loving and patient with children. May be wary of unfamiliar children.

German Longhaired Pointer (Medium/Large) Very patient and gentle with children, they make fine family dogs for the whole family.

Do not buy any dogs from petstores or breeders.

When I was a kid I grew up with a Black Lab. She was an excellent dog. I would recommend this breed to anyone with kids. Great temperament. Hope this helps. Take care.

You could try a corgi, they don't get big, but aren't considered to have the "Small Dog" neurosis.

They are trainable, and smart, and low maintenance. Just be sure to get one from a reputable breeder as they can have hip and leg problems.

Good luck!
