Ive had my lovebird for about a month now, and he his getting used to stepping up on a stick, but he will fly away from my finger and hands anytime i get close to him. i have to go into a really small room just to get him on my finger, and if he does go on it, he flys away almost instantly, or he will automatically fly to my head or shoulder. Is there any training advice that i could get to make him more friendly?

I have had many parakeets so I know where your coming from. You want to train your bird but you just don't know how. You must have patience because it might take a few weeks to train him to get comfortable with you. I suggest you have his wings clipped. It doesn't hurt the bird and it gives you an advantage so that he won't fly away from you. ( and yes the wings do grow back if your worried about that) Place some seeds in your palm and see if he comes to you. He might be too scared and be hesitant. Then put your finger in front of his chest and continue to do it everyday until he gets use to you. He will learn that he is in no danger and will go on your finger eventually. Thats how I taught my birds and they use to walk from my finger to my arm and to my shoulder. Good luck.

a good bird will sit co pilot from any point on your body. what you need to do first, is to get his wing feathers clipped. they will eventually grow back, so dont be affraid.
you need to confine the bird, to a small place, preferably a small cage. every day, take the bird out for at least an hour. hold the bird on your finger. talk to him gently and give him kisses. since his wings are clipped, he cannot fly, but if he jumps to your shoulder, immediatly take him off and put him back on your finger. do it gently.
be sure not to stay in just one room. walk around the house, but dont go outside. after about a half an hour on your finger, allow him short breaks where he can sit upon your shoulder while you do your bussiness around your house.
be patient, this will take a little while, but in time you will have a good bird. it also may help to lean to clip your birds wings, because keeping him clipped up for about 6 months will help in his taming and training. once he learns to fly co pilot from your finger, he should be a pretty good bird, but keeping him clipped helps build a bond, and after that, he shouldnt have a problem.
to train him to step onto your finger, just be persistant and make it worth wile for him. if he tries to run (he should be in his cage), just keep pushing up on his chest with your finger, but make it gentle. if he sits on your finger outside the cage, going co pilot, it should also help him not being frightend of it in the cage.
Hope this helps.

Keep up with the stick it gets him use to stepping onto something, but make going onto your finger into something worth while, hold a chunk of fruit in your fingers or a bit of carrot.

CUT HIS WINGS....they get very nasty when they can fly...cut them or have them cut, and you will see a BIG difference.
